Herbert Smith LLP was a multinational law firm headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The firm was founded in the City of London in 1882 by Norman Herbert Smith and merged with the Australian law firm Freehills on 1 October 2012, forming Herbert Smith Freehills. At the time of the merger it had 13 offices across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, around 240 partners and 1,300 fee-earners. It was regarded as forming part of the " Silver Circle" of leading British law firms. History Herbert Smith was founded by Norman Herbert Smith in 1882. Herbert Smith was a British businessman in Hong Kong. He was a partner of the Jardine, Matheson & Co. and member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Smith joined Jardine, Matheson & Co., the then biggest trading firm in the Far East, and became the partner by being authorised to sign in 1876, replacing Edward Whitehall. Herbert Smith (1 May 1889 – 1977) was a British aircraft designer. Smith was born in Bradley, North Yorkshire, England, on 1 May 1889. As a youth, he attended Keighley Boys Grammar School, in West Yorkshire. Sir Herbert Smith, 1st Baronet
Sir Herbert Smith, 1st Baronet (22 June 1872 – 14 July 1943), known as "Piggy" Smith, was an English carpet manufacturer. Smith's business was based in Kidderminster. During the First World War he was chairman of the Carpet Trade Rationing Committee and the Man-Power and Protection Committee and was a member of the Board of Control of the Wool and Textile Industries. For these services he was created a baronet in the 1920 Birthday Honours. From 1921 to 1938 he owned and lived at Witley Court, which partly burned down in 1937 and was never restored. He died at the age of 71 and was succeeded in the baronetcy by his son, also called Herbert. Herbert Henry Smith (29 January 1871 – 25 November 1935) was an Australian politician. He was born in St Kilda to architect Sydney William Smith and Sarah Ann Carter. He attended Alma Road Grammar School and became an importer, dealing mainly in bicycle parts and jewellery. He served on Melbourne City Council from 1913 to 1922, where he became known as an extreme conservative within the Nationalist Party. In 1921 he won a by-election for Melbourne Province in the Victorian Legislative Council. Herbert Smith (trade Unionist)
Herbert Smith (17 July 1862 – 16 June 1938) was a British trade unionist and miner. Born in Kippax, West Yorkshire, Smith was orphaned at a young age and spent time in a workhouse before being adopted by a local couple, one of whom was a miner. He later said that he never went to school. Smith then studied in Glasshoughton and Pontefract, and began working as a miner at the age of ten. Smith became active in his union, being elected to the branch committee at the age of seventeen, then in 1894 becoming a checkweighman. In 1896 he became Chairman of Castleford Trades Council, and in 1906 he became President of the Yorkshire Miners' Association. He joined the Independent Labour Party, and was elected to the West Riding County Council in 1903, and stood unsuccessfully for the Labour Party in Morley at the December 1910 general election. He was later elected as a councillor in Barnsley.
