Herbert Clarke (skater)
Herbert James Clarke (10 April 1879 – 5 September 1956) was a British figure skater who competed in the 1924 Winter Olympics. He was born in London. In 1924 he finished tenth in the singles event. Soham Rail Disaster
The Soham rail disaster occurred on 2 June 1944, during the Second World War, when a fire developed on the leading wagon of a heavy ammunition train. The wagon contained a quantity of high explosive bombs. The train crew had detached the wagon from the rest of the train and were drawing it away when the cargo exploded. The fireman of the train and the signalman at Soham signalbox were killed and several other people injured. The driver, Benjamin Gimbert, and fireman, James Nightall, were both awarded the George Cross for preventing further damage which would have occurred if the rest of the train had exploded. Details At 12.15 a.m. on 2 June 1944 a heavy freight train left Whitemoor marshalling yard, near (in the Isle of Ely, now in Cambridgeshire). Herb Clarke (ice Hockey)
Herbert Secord Clarke (September 22, 1887 – June 25, 1938) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played in various professional and amateur leagues, including the National Hockey Association (NHA). Amongst the teams he played with were the Cobalt Silver Kings. Career Before turning professional in the TPHL and NHA with the Cobalt Silver Kings Clarke played with the University of Toronto team in the CIAU. During the 1908–09 season, while with Cobalt, he led the TPHL in scoring alongside Haileybury's Harry Smith with 27 goals. He would finish tied for fifth in scoring during the 1910 NHA season, but retired after the season at an age of 22 despite being pursued by both the Ottawa Senators and Renfrew Creamery Kings for the 1910–11 season. Herb Clarke (weatherman)
Herbert Spencer Clarke (July 10, 1927 – January 8, 2012) was an American Weather forecasting, weatherman and television journalist. Clarke spent thirty-nine years, from 1958 to 1997, as a reporter for WCAU-TV in Philadelphia. Under Clarke, WCAU became the first local television station in the Philadelphia media market to use radar in its weather coverage, beginning in 1982. Clarke was born in 1927 in Eden, North Carolina, and graduated from Draper (now Eden) High School in 1944. He was in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 and served on the USS Hancock (CV-19) in the South Pacific Ocean. In 1946, he attended Pfeiffer University in North Carolina. He received a bachelor's degree in journalism from Bowling Green State University. He began working in broadcasting in 1948 in Eden, North Carolina.
