Helen Morgan (singer)
Helen Morgan (née Riggin; August 2, 1900 – October 9, 1941) was an American singer and actress who worked in films and on the stage. A quintessential torch singer, she made a big splash in the Chicago club scene in the 1920s. She starred as Julie LaVerne in the original Broadway production of Hammerstein and Kern's musical ''Show Boat'' in 1927, as well as in the 1932 Broadway revival of the musical, and appeared in two film adaptations, a part-talkie made in 1929 (prologue only) and a full-sound version made in 1936, becoming firmly associated with the role. She suffered from bouts of alcoholism, and despite her notable success in the title role of another Hammerstein and Kern's Broadway musical, '' Sweet Adeline'' (1929), her stage career was relatively short. Helen Morgan died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 41. "Helen Morgan" is an American television play broadcast on May 16, 1957, as part of the CBS television series, ''Playhouse 90''. It was the 33rd episode of the first season of ''Playhouse 90''. Polly Bergen won the Emmy Award for her performance. The production also received Emmy nominations for Program of the Year and best directing by George Roy Hill. Helen Clarissa Morgan (February 25, 1845 – May 23, 1914) was an American educator from the U.S. state of New York. She was the first woman to be appointed professor of Latin in a US coeducational college. Early years and education Helen Clarissa Morgan was born in Masonville, New York in 1845. The family moved to Oberlin, Ohio when Morgan was 12 years old. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1866, receiving the degree of bachelor of arts, and in 1911 that college conferred upon her the honorary degree of master of arts. Career Upon graduation she taught for three years in Michigan, and in 1869 was called to Nashville, Tennessee to teach Classical Studies in Fisk University, which was then located in the Federal Hospital Buildings. Helen Margaret Lilian Morgan (; born 9 April 1975) is a British Liberal Democrat politician and chartered accountant who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for North Shropshire since 2021. Early life and career Morgan was born Helen Margaret Lilian Halcrow on 9 April 1975 in Nottingham to John and Susan Halcrow. She grew up in Stone, Staffordshire. She attended Alleyne's High School in Stone before reading history at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1996. Morgan is a chartered accountant, and prior to her election to Parliament worked as financial controller for a real estate business based in North Shropshire. Helen Crlenkovich ( Croatian: ''Crljenković'') (Akron, Ohio, January 14, 1921 - Los Angeles, California, July 19, 1955) was one of the most successful athletes in America and the world on the three-meter springboard and the ten-meter platform. Edward Lee Morgan (July 10, 1938 – February 19, 1972) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer. One of the key hard bop musicians of the 1960s and a cornerstone of the Blue Note Records, Blue Note label, Morgan came to prominence in his late teens, recording with bandleaders like John Coltrane, Curtis Fuller, Dizzy Gillespie, Hank Mobley and Wayne Shorter, and playing in Art Blakey's The Jazz Messengers, Jazz Messengers. Morgan stayed with Blakey until 1961 and started to record as leader in the late '50s.
