Helen Dorothy Martin (July 23, 1909 – March 25, 2000) was an American actress of stage and television. Martin's career spanned over 60 years, appearing first on stage and later in film and television. Martin is best known for her roles as Wanda Williams on the CBS sitcom ''Good Times'' (1974–1979) and as Pearl Shay on the NBC sitcom '' 227'' (1985–1990). Biography Early life and education Martin was born in St. Louis and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She was an only child born to a family of musicians. Martin's parents wanted their daughter to become a concert pianist. At the urging of her parents, Martin attended Fisk University for a two-year span before dropping out to embark on an acting career. During the Great Depression, Martin supported herself as a domestic worker. Helen Reimensnyder Martin (October 18, 1868 – June 29, 1939) was an American author. Early life and education Martin was born on October 18, 1868, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She was the fifth child born to Reverend Cornelius and Henrietta Thurman Reimensnyder. Her father was a German immigrant and a Lutheran pastor who worked in Ohio before settling in Lancaster. Martin was called “Bill” by those who knew her because her parents expected a boy and wanted to name her William Allen after her mother’s uncle, a governor of Ohio. Martin was a student at Swarthmore and Radcliffe Colleges. Career Martin published 35 novels and numerous short stories between 1896 and 1939. Her work focused on the oppression of women and can be split into two topics: sophisticated white high society and rural Pennsylvania Dutch society. Early life Helen May Martin was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of John Henry Martin, a salesman, and Helen Smith Martin, a teacher and milliner. She was deaf and blind from childhood. Her mother taught her music using tactile illustrations with dried beans. Martin graduated from the Kansas State School for the Deaf in Olathe, though students who were also blind had not previously been admitted. She later attended a music conservatories in Wichita and Cincinnati, with her mother helping to interpret spoken instruction into hand signs in Martin's palm.
