Hattula () is a municipality of Finland. It is part of the Tavastia Proper region and until 2010 it was located in the province of Southern Finland. Hattula is almost completely surrounded by Hämeenlinna, only in the north it shares the border with Valkeakoski and Pälkäne on the Pirkanmaa region side. The municipality has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . Its seat is in Parola. The municipality is unilingually Finnish. A central element of the landscape in Hattula is lake Vanajavesi by which most of the oldest settlements in the area are concentrated. A notable monument is the Holy Cross Church in Hattula. The main attractions of Hattula are based on the long history of the municipality as a church pilgrimage site and the location of the Parolannummi garrison. Kanta-Häme (; ), sometimes referred to as Tavastia Proper, is a Regions of Finland, region (, ) of Finland. It borders the regions of Southwest Finland, Pirkanmaa, Päijänne Tavastia, Päijät-Häme, and Uusimaa (region), Uusimaa. Before the official adoption of the name ''Kanta-Häme'' in 1998, the region was commonly known as Häme. Hämeenlinna is the largest urban area in the region. Holy Cross Church, Hattula
The Holy Cross Church () in Hattula, Finland, is the oldest church in the former Tavastia (Häme) province. Archaeologist and art history professor Markus Hiekkanen has shown that construction of the current brick building spanned the period from 1472 to 1490 and that the building did not date to the 14th century, as previously thought. Unique for having been built almost entirely of brick rather than stone, the church was a popular pilgrimage destination during the Middle Ages. A grey stone perimeter wall was added in the 16th century. The church contains paintings from the years 1510 through 1922, as well as 40 wooden sculptures dating to the first half of the 14th century. Precious-metal crowns which had formerly belonged to the church were confiscated during the Reformation. The church pulpit, dating to 1550, is the oldest surviving pulpit in Finland. Anders Planman
Anders Planman (1724 – 25 April 1803) was a Finnish astronomer, professor of physics and mathematician. He was one of the first people to make systematical astronomical observations in Finland. Life Planman was born in Hattula. He came from a Swedish-speaking Finnish family and his father was a lieutenant. He studied at the Royal Academy of Turku from 1744 to 1754 and then continued his studies at Uppsala University. In 1756 he received the grade of docent in astronomy. In 1763 he was appointed professor of physics in Turku and retained the position until 1801, when he quit due to poor health. For three years he was also head of the academy. Because the tenureship as a professor was sometimes without a salary, Planman had also been ordained and worked as parish priest in Nousiainen and Paimio. Southern Finland
Southern Finland (, ) was a province of Finland from 1997 to 2009. It bordered the provinces of Western Finland and Eastern Finland. It also bordered the Gulf of Finland and Russia. History On September 1, 1997 the Uusimaa Province, the Kymi Province and the southern parts of the Häme Province were joined to form the new Southern Finland Province. All the provinces of Finland were abolished on January 1, 2010. Administration The State Provincial Office was a joint regional authority of seven different ministries.
