The Hamas organization has a permanent and established presence in Lebanon. The presence gained prominence following the announcement of the formation of the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, Al-Aqsa Flood Vanguards unit by Hamas in Beirut in 2023. Osama Hamdan ( ar, أسامة حمدان; born 1965) is a former senior representative of Hamas in Lebanon and Tehran. He previously held the position of Foreign relations of Hamas, Head of International Relations Department for Hamas. Early life Hamdan was born in the Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian refugee family that fled the village of al-Batani al-Sharqi during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He attended high school in Kuwait, graduating in 1982. He then enrolled at the Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry in 1986. While he was at university, Hamdan became an activist with the Islamic Student Movement. Assassination Of Saleh Al Arouri
On 2 January 2024, Saleh al-Arouri, the deputy leader of Hamas, was killed in an Israeli strike on an office in the Dahieh neighborhood of Beirut, Lebanon. The strike also killed six other individuals, including additional high-ranking Hamas militants. Saleh al-Arouri was the deputy leader of the Hamas political bureau and one of the architects of the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel. He was also responsible for the expansion of Hamas' activities in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, including attacks on Israelis. Lebanese Forces
The Lebanese Forces ( ar, القوات اللبنانية '')'' is a Lebanese Christian-based political party and former militia during the Lebanese Civil War. It currently holds 19 of the 128 seats in Lebanon's parliament and is therefore the largest party in parliament. The organization was created in 1976 by Pierre and Bachir Gemayel, Camille Chamoun, and other party leaders during the Lebanese Civil War. Taif Agreement
The Taif Agreement ( ar, اتفاق الطائف), officially known as the ( ar, وثيقة الوفاق الوطني, label=none'')'', was reached to provide "the basis for the ending of the civil war and the return to political normalcy in Lebanon". Mohammed Deif ( ar, محمّد ضيف ; born 1965 in Khan Younis), born Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri, is a Palestinian chief of staff and supreme military commander of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. He has been Israel's 'most wanted' man since 1995 for killing IDF soldiers, planning suicide bombings and kidnappings. The most recent Israeli attempt to kill Deif was during Operation Guardian of the Walls in May 2021. Deif's wife, infant son, and daughter were killed by an Israeli attack in 2014. Ali Abed Al Rahman Baraka ( ar, علي بركة) is a senior Hamas official based in Beirut, Lebanon. As the Palestinian militant group's head of Department of National Relations Abroad, Baraka oversees the group's foreign relations. He was previously the Hamas representative in Lebanon from 2011 to 2019. In Lebanon, Baraka was responsible for Hamas's relations with Hezbollah and Iran.
