HP Calculators
HP calculators are various calculators manufactured by the Hewlett-Packard company over the years. Their desktop models included the HP 9800 series, while their handheld models started with the HP-35. Their focus has been on high-end scientific, engineering and complex financial uses. History In the 1960s, Hewlett-Packard was becoming a diversified electronics company with product lines in electronic Measuring instrument, test equipment, scientific instrumentation, and medical electronics, and was just beginning its entry into computers. The corporation recognized two opportunities: it might be possible to automate the instrumentation that HP was producing, and HP's customer base were likely to buy a product that could replace the slide rules and adding machines that were being used for computation. HP48G
The HP 48 is a series of graphing calculators designed and produced by Hewlett-Packard from 1990 until 2003. The series includes the HP 48S, HP 48SX, HP 48G, HP 48GX, and HP 48G+, the G models being expanded and improved versions of the S models. The models with an X suffix are expandable via special RAM (memory expansion) and ROM (software application) cards. In particular, the GX models have more onboard memory than the G models. The G+ models have more onboard memory only. The SX and S models have the same amount of onboard memory. Note that the similarly named hp 48gII (2004) is not a member of the series but closely related to the HP 49/50 series, HP 49g+. The calculators use Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) and the RPL (programming language), RPL programming language. William Reddington Hewlett
William Redington Hewlett ( ; May 20, 1913 – January 12, 2001) was an American engineer and the co-founder, with David Packard, of the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP). Early life and education Hewlett was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where his father taught at the University of Michigan Medical School. In 1916 the family moved to San Francisco after his father, Albion Walter Hewlett, took a similar position at Stanford Medical School, located at the time in San Francisco. He attended Lowell High School and was the 1929-1930 Battalion Commander of the school's Army JROTC program. He was accepted at Stanford University as a favor to his late father who died of a brain tumor in 1925. Hewlett received his bachelor's degree from Stanford in 1934, a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1936, and a post-masters engineering degree in electrical engineering from Stanford in 1939. The Hewlett-Packard Voyager series of calculators were introduced by Hewlett-Packard in 1981. All members of this series are programmable, use Reverse Polish Notation, and feature continuous memory. Nearly identical in appearance, each model provided different capabilities and was aimed at different user markets. HP-10B
The HP-10B (F1636A) is a student business calculator introduced in 1987. The model of this calculator proved to compete well with the higher end RPN HP-12C. Two versions of the 10B were produced, the first version came with orange lettering around the keys and used an 1LU7 HP Saturn processor, the later model (in 2000) with teal-green labels. The functionality of the two versions appears to be identical. The successor HP 10BII (F1902A), which was introduced in 2001, has both cosmetic and architectural changes from its predecessor. It uses a different CPU based on the Hitachi H8 architecture. The calculator's firmware is not a perfect replica of the overall HP10B functionality. For instance, the keyboard layout is different, with two separate shift keys, and the available numbered-storage registers is reduced from 15 to 10. The hp 9g (F2222A) is a graphing calculator designed by Kinpo Electronics, Inc and produced by Hewlett-Packard. It has basic graphing, scientific and programming features designed for use by students. Despite resembling a typical scientific calculator in appearance, such as those by competitors Casio and Sharp, the 9g departs from HP calculator tradition because it does not have an RPN mode. Reverse Polish Notation
Reverse Polish notation (RPN), also known as reverse Łukasiewicz notation, Polish postfix notation or simply postfix notation, is a mathematical notation in which operators ''follow'' their operands, in contrast to prefix or Polish notation (PN), in which operators ''precede'' their operands. The notation does not need any parentheses for as long as each operator has a fixed number of operands. The term ''postfix notation'' describes the general scheme in mathematics and computer sciences, whereas the term ''reverse Polish notation'' typically refers specifically to the method used to enter calculations into hardware or software calculators, which often have additional side effects and implications depending on the actual implementation involving a stack.
