HMS Princess Margaret
HMS ''Princess Margaret'' was a minelayer operated by the British Royal Navy during and after the First World War. She was built by the Scottish shipbuilder William Denny and Brothers, William Denny for the Canadian Pacific Railway as a ocean liner, liner to serve on the Pacific West Coast, and as such was powered by geared steam turbines, giving a speed of . The outbreak of war caused her to be taken over by the Royal Navy and to be converted to a minelayer, carrying as many as 500 Sea mine, mines. She was widely used for minelaying in the North Sea and English Channel during the war, which she survived, having laid the most mines of any Royal Navy ship during the war. She remained in Royal Navy service following the end of the war, taking part in the British campaign in the Baltic (1918–19), British intervention in the Russian Civil War. The Princess fleet is an eponym for the coastal vessels of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in the first half of the 20th century. The names of these small ocean liners began with the title "Princess." The ships of the British Columbia Coast Steamships came to be called "pocket liners" because they offered amenities like a great ocean liner, but on a smaller scale. The CPR princesses were a coastal counterpart to CPR's "Empress" fleet of passenger liners which sailed on trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic routes. A high pressure watertube boiler (also spelled water-tube and water tube) is a type of boiler in which water circulates in tubes heated externally by fire. Fuel is burned inside the furnace, creating hot gas which boils water in the steam-generating tubes. In smaller boilers, additional generating tubes are separate in the furnace, while larger utility boilers rely on the water-filled tubes that make up the walls of the furnace to generate steam. The heated water/steam mixture then rises into the steam drum. Here, saturated steam is drawn off the top of the drum. The draft or draught of a ship is a determined depth of the vessel below the waterline, measured vertically to its hull's lowest—its propellers, or keel, or other reference point. Draft varies according to the loaded condition of the ship. A deeper draft means the ship will have greater vertical depth below the waterline.
