Gwardamanġa
Gwardamanġa (English language, English: Guardamangia or sometimes incorrectly written as Gwarda Mangia) is a hamlet in Pietà, Malta, Pietà, Malta. Gwardamanġa is the home of St. Luke's Hospital, Malta, St. Luke's Hospital, Malta's former general public hospital, and Villa Guardamangia, the former home of Queen Elizabeth II. It is also the location of the Rediffusion House. Overview Villa Guardamangia, at Gwardamanġa, is a large two-storey building, best known for its elaborate porch which is reached by a flight of steps from each side. The first has a convex configuration over which is a wide elliptical arch. Scroll corbels support the lintels of the sides, while a square-headed doorway is set in an elliptical arched recess. On top of the porch are a series of segmentally arched, louvred windows. Villa Guardamangia
Villa Guardamangia (Italian language, Italian – 'look' and 'eat'), formerly known as Casa Medina and sometimes referred to as ''Casa Guardamangia'', is a townhouse in Gwardamanġa, Pietà, Malta, which served as the residence of Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh (later Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth II), and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, between 1949 and 1951, while Philip was stationed in Malta as a serving Royal Navy officer. History The property belonged to a Catholic priest in around 1814, at the start of the British colonisation of Malta. It is believed that the seaside property was built around the mid-18th century. Later, in the 20th century, it belonged to several prominent Maltese families, which included the Sant Fourniers, Bartolos and Schembris. Pietà, Malta
Pietà () is a small harbour town in the Eastern Region of Malta, located near the outskirts of the capital city Valletta. Etymology The name ''Tal-Pietà'' is derived from Italian, and means "Pity", referring to the pity of Our Lady of Sorrows. This name came about from a chapel and rectory built in 1612 dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. Description Pietà is the suburb next-closest to the capital after Floriana. Malta's former national hospital, St. Luke's, is located in Tal-Pietà, and an old boathouse of notable historic interest, now in use as a restaurant, is located on the waterfront. The town is named after a Church of Our Lady of Sorrows dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries which is still in active use today. A couple of streets nearby bear the names of St. Augustine and his mother, St. Monica. Tal-Pietà was a departure point for the Gozo ferry before the construction of a yacht marina. Rediffusion House
Rediffusion House is a Modern architecture, Modernist building located in Gwardamanġa, limits of Pietà, Malta, Pietà, Malta. Designed by the architect Carmelo Falzon, the building was completed in 1958 for Rediffusion (Malta) Ltd. It briefly housed Television Malta in the 1960s before a purpose-built Television House was constructed in 1964. The building continued to house Rediffusion until 1975, when the company's operations were taken over by Xandir Malta. The building remained in use, becoming known as Broadcasting House, and it has housed the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) since that company took over from Xandir Malta in 1991. Between 2006 and 2008, plans were made to demolish the building and replace it with a new headquarters for PBS, but these were not carried out due to the building's significance in both Malta's architecture and broadcasting history. MaltaPost p.l.c. is the Postal administration, postal service company in Malta. The public limited company took over the mail, postal services previously carried out by Postage stamps and postal history of Malta#Posta Ltd (1995–1998), Posta Limited, and started operating on 1 May 1998. History MaltaPost p.l.c. was registered with the Malta Registry of Companies as a public limited company on 16 April 1998. It took over from Posta Limited on 1 May of that year. On 31 January 2002, MaltaPost was partially privatized when the government sold 35% to Transcend Worldwide Ltd, a subsidiary company of New Zealand Post Ltd.
