Gwendolen () is a feminine given name, in general use only since the 19th century. It has come to be the standard English form of Latin '' Guendoloena'', which was first used by Geoffrey of Monmouth as the name of a legendary British queen in his '' History of the Kings of Britain'' (). He reused the name in his '' Life of Merlin'' (c. 1150) for a different character, the wife of the titular magician " Merlinus", a counsellor to King Arthur; the metre shows that Geoffrey pronounced it as a pentasyllable, ''Guĕndŏlŏēnă'', with the "gu" pronounced . Dr. Arthur Hutson suggests that "Guendoloena" arose from a misreading of the old Welsh masculine name '' Guendoleu''; Geoffrey may have mistaken the final ''U'' for an ''N'', then Latinized *''Guendolen'' as a feminine name to arrive at Guendoloena. Guendalina Buffon
Guendalina Buffon (born ) is an Italian retired volleyball player. She was part of the Italy women's national volleyball team. She participated in the 1994 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship. Personal life Guendalina was born into a family of Italian athletes: her mother Maria Stella Masocco was a discus thrower, and her father Adriano was a weightlifter. Following their athletic retirement, they subsequently worked as P.E. school teachers. Guendalina's sister also played volleyball for the Italian national team; their younger brother Gianluigi is a former professional football goalkeeper who played for the Italy national football team for two decades and won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. A gold medalist at the World Archery Championships, European Games and the Mediterranean Games, she competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics, finishing in fourth in the Archery at the 2016 Summer Olympics - Women's team, women's team event. Early and personal life Guendalina Sartori was born on 8 August 1988 in Monselice in the northern Italian province of Province of Padua, Padua. She is a member of the Italian Air Force.
