Guatemala At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Guatemala competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's fourteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in 1952, despite failing to register any athletes in three other editions (1956 to 1964). Guatemalan Olympic Committee () confirmed a team of 21 athletes, 15 men and 6 women, to compete in 10 sports. It was the nation's largest delegation sent to the Olympics since 1996, surpassing the record of 19 athletes set in London 2012. Among the Guatemalan athletes, two of them returned for their third consecutive appearance in Rio de Janeiro: badminton player Kevin Cordón and Laser sailor Juan Ignacio Maegli. Other notable athletes also featured siblings Enrique and Hebert Brol in double trap shooting, long-distance freestyle swimmer Valerie Gruest, the youngest of the team (aged 17), and race walker Erick Barrondo, who emerged as the nation's first Olympic medalist in 2012. Guatemalan Olympic Committee
The Guatemalan Olympic Committee (, abbreviated as COG) is a non-profit organization serving as the National Olympic Committee of Guatemala and a part of the International Olympic Committee and Pan American Sports Organization, PASO. It was formed in 1947 and recognized by the IOC that same year. Suspension On 15 October 2022 the International Olympic Committee officially suspended the National Olympic Committee of Guatemala. As a result of the suspension, any athletes of Guatemala no longer had the ability represent the country and compete under the country's flag/name at the Olympic Games and other international multi-sports events. The Guatemalan NOC would also lose all the funding from IOC. On March 19, 2024, the IOC EB provisionally lifted the suspension of Guatemala's NOC. The Badminton World Federation, aka BWF, is the international governing body for the sport of badminton approved by the International Olympic Committee. It was founded on 5 July 1934 as the International Badminton Federation with nine member nations: Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Mirna Sucely Ortiz Flores (born 28 February 1987) is a Guatemalan racewalker. Having begun in the sport in 1998, she won a Central American youth title in 2000, and was a promising young athlete in her discipline, but had to abandon the sport at the age of 14 due to financial hardship. She then returned to a competitive level in 2011, urged by coach Rigoberto Medina. Her return proved to be fruitful as in September 2011 she earned second place in the National Polish Championship in Varsovia, thereby qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympic, and a few weeks later she won the silver medal at the 2011 Pan American Games, behind her compatriot Jamy Franco in a race they both led from start to end. The women's 20 kilometres walk at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was held on 19 August on a route along Pontal. Summary The race took off as a pack, with Lupita González on point but nobody exerting any force to take the lead.
