Tanzim Hurras al-Din (), sometimes referred to as Al-Qaeda in Syria, was a Salafi Movement, Salafi Jihadism, Jihadist organization that fought in the Syrian civil war. The group's former head, Abu Humam al-Shami, was the general military commander of the defunct Al-Nusra Front, and had fought for Al-Qaeda during the Afghan Civil War (1996–2001), Third Afghan Civil War and the Iraqi insurgency (2003–2011), Iraqi insurgency. Hurras al-Din was established by the leaders of the AQ-affiliated Khorasan group and Al-Qaeda loyalists of Al-Nusra Front who opposed Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, Al-Nusra's dissolution and merger with other Islamic groups to form Tahrir al-Sham. Al-Shami announced the formation of Hurras al-Din on 27 February 2018. The SMART News Agency () is an independent online Arabic-language media agency that mainly operates in Syria. It was owned by the Syrian Media Action Revolution Team (SMART), the largest independent opposition media network operating in Syria. Launched in August 2013, the agency releases daily news content, including photographs, videos, and text. As of October 2015, the agency has 300 staff members. History Syrian activists based in France established the Syrian Media Action Revolution Team (SMART) in April 2011. One of its co-founders was Chamsy Sarkis, who would later become the founder and CEO of SMART News Agency. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (also known as SOHR; ), founded in May 2006, is a United Kingdom-based information office whose stated aim is to document human rights abuses in Syria; since 2011 it has focused on the Syrian Civil War. The Army of Glory (), formerly the Union of Glory (), was an Sunni Islamist Syrian rebel group affiliated with the Free Syrian Army active in northwestern Syria, mainly in the al-Ghab Plain in northern Hama and its surroundings. Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have supplied the group with anti-tank missiles including 9K111 Fagots and BGM-71 TOWs. As of 2019, was estimated to have between 2,000 and 5,000 fighters in its ranks. Firqat Al-Ghuraba
Firqat al-Ghuraba is an active jihadist group aligned with al-Qaeda based in opposition held areas in the Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria. The group mostly consists of foreign fighters from Europe with many, including the group's leader, originating from France and Belgium. The group is also believed to have sworn allegiance to al-Qaeda. Background The group was established by Omar Diaby who is originally from France of Senegalese heritage. He had recruited foreign fighters to fight in Syria and many would later join either the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant or al-Nusra and both of were branches of al-Qaeda in Syria at the time. Ansar Al-Din Front
Jabhat Ansar al-Din () is a jihadist alliance that announced itself on 25 July 2014, during the Syrian Civil War. The alliance contains two groups: Harakat Sham al-Islam and Harakat Fajr ash-Sham al-Islamiya; it had declared that was not affiliated with any other "parties". The Green Battalion was originally a signatory, but around October 2014, it swore allegiance to the leader of Jaish al-Muhajireen wal-Ansar and was integrated into that faction. The alliance had attempted to maintain neutrality in the conflict between ISIL and other groups. Ansar Al-Tawhid (Syria)
Ansar al-Tawhid (, ) was an armed Islamist militant group fighting in the Syrian Civil War. The group was made up of former Jund al-Aqsa members. It was allied with Al-Qaeda and part of the Hurras al-Din-led Rouse the Believers Operations Room until May 2020, when it announced its departure from the coalition. At the Syrian Revolution Victory Conference, which was held on 29 January 2025, most factions of the armed opposition, including the Ansar al-Tawhid, announced their dissolution and were incorporated into the newly formed Ministry of Defense. Tahrir Al-Sham
Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) was a Sunni Islamist political organisation and paramilitary group involved in the Syrian civil war.
