Grotteria is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Reggio Calabria in the Italian region Calabria, located about southwest of Catanzaro and about northeast of Reggio Calabria. The local economy, once based on agriculture and shepherdry, has slowed due to emigration, which shrank the population from 9,242 in 1951 to about 3,380. Grotteria borders the following municipalities: Fabrizia, Galatro, Gioiosa Ionica, Mammola, Marina di Gioiosa Ionica, Martone, San Giovanni di Gerace, Siderno. Physical Geography Grotteria is a town in the Torbido Valley in Locride, located on the Ionian side. Martone (Central-Southern Calabrian, Calabrian: ) is a comune in the province of Reggio Calabria, Calabria, region of southern Italy. The town has historical roots dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries, when it was founded by Greece, Greek Christianity, Christian monks from the Byzantine Empire, Byzantine Orient. These monks, who came from the regions surrounding the Aegean Sea and the Levant, played a pivotal role in establishing the area. Martone, like many of the communes in the Locride area, was part of a larger group of ''comuni'', all of which were founded by Greek monks. Residents of these ''comuni'' practised monasticism. Siderno ( or ; ) is a town and ''comune'' in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, Calabria, southern Italy, about 3 kilometres from Locri. Siderno Marina is the newer town located on the Ionian coast. It is a destination for both Italian and foreign tourists and has a bathing beach. Siderno Superiore is the old town, higher up on the flank of the coastal mountain range. It has historic palaces, old buildings and very narrow streets. Gioiosa Ionica ( Calabrian: ) is a town and ''comune'' in Italy in the province of Reggio Calabria, region of Calabria. It lies near the east coast of Calabria and covers an area of . The remains of a theatre belonging to the Roman period were discovered in 1883 at Marina di Gioiosa Ionica. Archaeological sites Villa Naniglio Outside the historic centre of the town is the Roman Villa of Naniglio, located on a hill sloping towards the coast in a panoramic position overlooking the Torbido river valley and a few kilometers from the sea, about 18km north of the archaeological site of ancient Locri.
