Greenways Road Railway Station
Greenways Road is a railway station on the Chennai MRTS. Located on Greenways Road, it exclusively serves the Chennai MRTS. History Greenways Road station was opened on 26 January 2004, as part of the second phase of the Chennai MRTS network. Structure The elevated station is built on the eastern bank of Buckingham Canal adjacent to the junction of the Buckingham Canal with Adyar River. Like most other stations along the Chennai MRTS route, Greenways Road features 2 side platforms, which the length of each platform being 280 metres. The station building consists of 3,300 sq m of parking area in its basement. Station layout Service and connections Greenways Road is the tenth station on the MRTS line to Velachery. In the return direction from Velachery, it is currently the eight station towards Chennai Beach station. The Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System, commonly referred to as Chennai MRTS, is a metropolitan rail transit system in Chennai, India. It is operated by Southern Railway of the state-owned Indian Railways. Opened in 1995, it was the first elevated railway line in India. The railway line runs from Chennai Beach to Velachery, covering a distance of with 18 stations and is integrated with the wider Chennai suburban railway network. While the suburban railway has been operational in Chennai since 1931, the Planning Commission of Government of India formed a research group to recommend development of transportation in major cities including Madras in 1965. Side Platform
A side platform (also known as a marginal platform or a single-face platform) is a platform positioned to the side of one or more railway tracks or guideways at a railway station, tram stop, or transitway. A station having dual side platforms, one for each direction of travel, is the basic design used for double-track railway lines (as opposed to, for instance, the island platform where a single platform lies between the tracks). Greenways Road
Greenways Road () is a road and neighbourhood in Chennai, India. It is lined with the official residences of ministers of Tamil Nadu state government and judges of Chennai High Court. It also houses the Tahsildar district magistrate office of the Mylapore-Triplicane taluk. A park and memorial named after B. R. Ambedkar, the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Tamil Nadu Judicial Academy, Jesus Calls Prayer Tower, Kutchipudi Art Academy, Tamil Nadu Government Music College (Broodies Castle), Tamil Nadu Human Rights Commission, Anna Institute of Management, Dr. MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women are located on this road. Buckingham Canal
The Buckingham Canal is a -long fresh water navigation canal, that parallels the Coromandel Coast of South India from Kakinada of Andhra Pradesh to Parangipettai near Chidambaram of Tamil Nadu. The canal connects most of the natural backwaters along the coast to Chennai (Madras) port. The canal was constructed during British rule, and was an important waterway during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Competition from rail and later road transport diminished its importance, and during the 20th century portions became unusable and badly polluted. More recently there is increased interest in the canal's potential to protect coastal communities from flooding by tsunamis and cyclones as well as provide a navigable waterway, and projects have been undertaken to restore and improve the canal. Adyar River
The Adyar River, which originates near the Chembarambakkam Lake in the Kanchipuram district, is one of the three rivers that winds through Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, and joins the Bay of Bengal at the Adyar estuary. The long river contributes to the Estuary, estuarine ecosystem of Chennai. Despite the high pollution levels, boating and fishing take place in this river. The river collects surplus water from about 200 tanks and lakes, small streams and the rainwater drains in the city, with a combined catchment area of . Velachery Railway Station
The Velachery MRTS Station is a ground level station on the Chennai MRTS railway line in Chennai. It is located near the junction of Velachery Main Road and Inner Ring Road in Velachery. The station is built on the northern banks of Pallikaranai wetland. History The station was opened on 19 November 2007. The EMU maintenance shed at the station was opened in 2008. Structure The length of the platform is 280 m. The station premises also consists of 12,250 sq m of open parking area. Chennai Beach Station
Chennai Beach (formerly known as Madras Beach) (station code: MSB) is a railway terminus of the Southern Railway network in Parry's Corner, Chennai, India. Built on reclaimed land, the station serves the suburban services of the Chennai Suburban Railway and Mass Rapid Transit System (Chennai) and a few passenger trains. It serves as the northern terminus for the Chennai MRTS line. The station is named after High Court Beach, which was later built up as part of Chennai Port, and not after the Marina Beach, which is located a few kilometres away and is served by , Triplicane and Lighthouse stations of the MRTS line. The station consists of 1500 square metres of open parking area. The station is located adjacent to the High Court and Broadway.
