The following is a list of the governors and lieutenant governors of Prince Edward Island, known as ''St. John's Island'' until 1799. Though the present day office of the lieutenant governor in Prince Edward Island came into being only upon the province's entry into Canadian Confederation in 1873, the post is a continuation from the first governorship of St. John's Island in 1769. Lieutenant Governor Of Prince Edward Island
The lieutenant governor of Prince Edward Island () is the representative in Prince Edward Island of the monarch, who operates distinctly within the province but is also shared equally with the ten other jurisdictions of Canada. The lieutenant governor of Prince Edward Island is appointed in the same manner as the other provincial viceroys in Canada and is similarly tasked with carrying out most of the monarch's constitutional and ceremonial duties. The present lieutenant governor of Prince Edward Island is Wassim Salamoun, who assumed the role on 17 October 2024. Thomas Heath Haviland
Thomas Heath Haviland (November 13, 1822 – September 11, 1895) was a Canadian lawyer, politician and father of Canadian Confederation. He was born in, and died in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada on October 18, 1873, and represented Prince Edward Island as a Conservative until his resignation in July 1879. Haviland was a Freemason of Victoria Lodge No. 383 (Scotland). Early life and education Thomas Heath Haviland was born on November 13, 1822, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, to Thomas Heath Haviland Sr., an English-born emigrant to Prince Edward Island and wealthy landowner, and Jane Rebecca Brecken. Order Of St Michael And St George
The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is a British order of chivalry founded on 28 April 1818 by George, Prince of Wales (the future King George IV), while he was acting as prince regent for his father, King George III. William Cleaver Francis Robinson
Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson (14 January 1834 – 2 May 1897) was an Irish colonial administrator and musical composer, who wrote several well-known songs. He was born in County Westmeath, Ireland, and was educated at home and at the Royal Naval School. He joined the Colonial Office service in 1858 and became the president of Montserrat in 1862. He married Olivia Edith Deane in 1862. He began serving as governor of the Falkland Islands in May 1866 and governed Prince Edward Island from 1870–1873, helping the island join a union with Canada. He became the governor of the Leeward Islands in 1874 and served his first term as the Western Australia governor from 1875–1877. Robert Hodgson (judge)
Sir Robert Hodgson (1798 – 15 September 1880) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, judge, and the second Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. Early life and education Hodgson was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in 1798, to Robert Hodgson Sr. and Rebecca Robinson, the former being a member of the General Assembly of Prince Edward Island and public speaker who died while Hodgson Jr. was a child. His family was Anglican and Hodgson was the oldest of a total of 5 children, 3 sons and a daughter. Hodgson moved to Windsor, Nova Scotia to complete his education, going to the University of King's College. He then traveled to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where Simon Bradstreet Robie and James William Johnston helped him study law. He later returned to Charlottetown and became a politician and lawyer. George Dundas (colonial Administrator)
George Dundas (12 November 1819 – 18 March 1880) was a Scottish Tory politician and colonial administrator. Born in England, he was the eldest son of James Dundas, and resided in Dundas Castle. Dundas purchased a second lieutenantcy in the Rifle Brigade in 1839, serving in various places such as Bermuda and Nova Scotia. He was promoted first lieutenant without purchase in 1842. In politics, he represented Linlithgowshire in the House of Commons from 1847 until his resignation in 1859. On 8 June 1859, Dundas was appointed Governor of Prince Edward Island, a position he kept until 22 October 1868. In 1875, Dundas was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Saint Vincent in the Caribbean. Charles Young (governor)
Charles Young (30 April 1812 – after 1875) was a Scottish-born lawyer, judge and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He served as administrator for Prince Edward Island in 1859. He was born in Glasgow, the son of John Young and Agnes Renny, and came to Halifax with his family in 1814. He was educated at Dalhousie College and was called to the Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island bars in 1838. Young entered practice with his brothers William and George. He served as a member of the Legislative Council of Prince Edward Island for 23 years. Sir Dominick Daly (11 August 1798 – 19 February 1868) was a British colonial public servant and administrator during the 19th century, who held positions in British North America, History_of_Tobago, Tobago and South Australia. Born in Ireland to a well-connected family, he obtained the position of private secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Lower Canada in 1822. Alexander Bannerman
Sir Alexander Bannerman (7 October 1788 – 30 December 1864) was a Scottish merchant, vintner, politician and British colonial governor. Early life Known as "Sandy", he was born on 7 October 1788 in Scotland. He was the eldest son of merchant Thomas Bannerman (1743–1820) and his wife, Jean (née Simson) Bannerman (1745–1817), who married in 1779. Ambrose Lane
Ambrose Lane (ca 1791 – September 7, 1853) was an Irish-born soldier, judge and political figure. He was administrator for Prince Edward Island from October 1850 to March 1851. Lane was born in at LanesparCounty Tipperary, at Lane's Park the son of Colonel John Hamilton Lane and Jane Hunt of the de Vere Hunt whose family owned a neighbouring property called Glangool They were married in nearby Ballingary on 10 Feb 178 He joined the 99th Foot (later the 98th Foot) in 1807, reaching the rank of lieutenant before he retired on half pay on Prince Edward Island in 1818, serving as captain in the island's militia.
