Lanao del Sur ( tl, Timog Lanao; Maranao and ilp, Pagabagatan Ranao), officially the Province of Lanao del Sur, is a province in the Philippines located in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The capital is the city of Marawi, and it borders Lanao del Norte to the north, Bukidnon to the east, and Maguindanao del Norte and Cotabato to the south. To the southwest lies Illana Bay, an arm of the Moro Gulf. Situated in the interior of Lanao del Sur is Lanao Lake, the largest in Mindanao. Etymology "Lanao" means "lake", derived from ''ranao''. Princess Tarhata Alonto-Lucman (June 26, 1926 – February 26, 2021) was a Filipino politician and Maranao royalty who was the first female governor of the province of Lanao del Sur. Early life Tarhata Alonto-Lucman was born on June 26, 1926, to a Maranao royal family with her father being Alauya Alonto, the Sultan of Ramain. At five years old, she was confined in a Christian-run hospital due to a life-threatening condition. During that time, the Maranao preferred to rely on traditional healers and her Muslim family was reluctant to treat her in a hospital over concerns that she might get converted to Christianity. Mohammad Ali B. Dimaporo (June 15, 1918 – April 21, 2004) was a Filipino politician who represented the Lanao provinces in the House of Representatives of the Philippines from the 1950s to the 1990s and served as Governor of Lanao del Norte from 1960 to 1965 and of Lanao del Sur from 1976 to 1986.
