This is a list of the heads of state of The Gambia, from the independence of The Gambia in 1965 to the present day. From 1965 to 1970 the head of state under the Constitution of 1965 was the queen of the Gambia, Elizabeth II, who was also the monarch of other Commonwealth realms. The monarch was represented in the Gambia by a governor-general. The Gambia became a republic within the Commonwealth under the Constitution of 1970 and the monarch and governor-general were replaced by an executive president. Dawda Jawara (1979)
Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara (16 May 1924 – 27 August 2019) was a The Gambia, Gambian politician who served as Prime Minister of the Gambia, prime minister from 1962 to 1970, and then as the first President of the Gambia, President of The Gambia from 1970 to 1994, when he was 1994 Gambian coup d'état, overthrown by Yahya Jammeh. Jawara was born in Barajally, Central River Division, MacCarthy Island Division, now the Central River Region. He was the son of Mamma Fatty and Almami Jawara. The National People's Party is a Gambian political party centred around the leadership of the incumbent President of the Gambia, Adama Barrow. History The NPP was founded on 31 December 2019 by Adama Barrow amidst internal turmoil within Coalition 2016. The Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) is a political party in the Gambia. Founded by army officers who staged the 1994 coup, it was the dominant party of the Gambia from 1996 to 2016 under president Yahya Jammeh. History The APRC was formed in 1996 to support coup organiser Yahya Jammeh's successful campaign in the 1996 presidential election. The party would rule over the country for the next twenty years, with subsequent elections being heavily controversial and the APRC facing very little opposition.
