Government College Of Arts and Crafts Assam or "GCAC" ( as, চৰকাৰী চাৰু আৰু কাৰু কলা মহাবিদ্যালয় অসম) is one of the oldest art colleges in North-East India. It offers Bachelor Of Fine Arts (Degree)(B.F.A.) to students of North-East India. History The School of Art was initially started in a single room in the Don Bosco School at Paanbazar in 1947 by late Jibeswar Baruah. Jibeswar Baruah was the head of the school till 1964. In 1948 the school of art started to receive a recurring grant of Rs. 50.00 per month from the State Government. After few bad patches it moved to a rented house in Panbazar. Sobha Brahma
Sobha Brahma (14 October 1929 – 2012) was an Indian painter and sculptor. He lived and worked in Guwahati. He graduated from the Kalabhavana Visva-Bharati University Shantiniketan West-Bengal. Brahma developed a unique individual style that mixed traditional folk and modern Indian art. He served as the Principal of the Government College Of Arts and Crafts Assam, as the Vice-Chairman of the prominent cultural centre Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, set up under the Assam Accord, and as a member of the general council of Lalit Kala Akademi. University Grants Commission (UGC) is a statutory body set up by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India in accordance to the UGC Act 1956 and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education in India. It provides recognition to universities in India, and disbursements of funds to such recognized universities and colleges. Tarun Gogoi (11 October 1936 – 23 November 2020) was an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016. Lakhyadhar Choudhury (1915–2000) was an actor, playwright, film-director, humanist, prose-writer, orator, cabinet-minister in the state of Assam, state legislator, teacher, 'freedom fighter', president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha and the Asom Natya Sanmelan.
