Goalball At The 2012 Summer Paralympics – Women's Tournament
The women's tournament in goalball at the 2012 Summer Paralympics was contested from 30 August to 7 September. 28 matches were played; 20 in the group play, 4 quarter-finals, 2 semi-finals, a bronze medal match, and a gold medal match. Ten teams participated, with six athletes per team. Japan women's national goalball team, Japan won the gold medal by beating China women's national goalball team, China in the final, while Sweden women's national goalball team, Sweden beat Finland women's national goalball team, Finland in the match for bronze. Competition format The teams were divided into two equal groups for a round robin tournament, single round robin group stage. The top four teams of each group advanced to the quarter-finals. All matches in the second stage were Single-elimination tournament, knock-out format. Meica Jayne Horsburgh (née Christensen; born 24 February 1989) is an Australian goalball player. She began playing the sport in 2004, the same year she made her national team debut. After the national team took a three-year break, she was named the captain in 2010 and played in the Goalball World Championships. She represented Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and was at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics. Personal Horsburgh was born in Wynnum North, Queensland, on 24 February 1989. She has a visual disability, with partial sight. She attended Cavendish Road State High School, and played in a goalball demonstration game there in 2004. Other sports she participates in include skiing. Nicole Esdaile (born 1 June 1987) is an Australian goalball player and is classified as a B2 competitor. She took up the sport in 1999, and made her national team debut in 2010. Subsequently, she has competed at the 2010 Goalball World Championships, 2011 IBSA Africa Oceania Goalball Regional Champions and 2011 IBSA Goalball World Cup.
