''Gilberte de Courgenay'' is a 1942 Swiss biographical film about Gilberte Montavon directed by Franz Schnyder and starring Rudolf Bernhard, Anne-Marie Blanc and Zarli Carigiet. Story The Film was based on a novel by Rudolf Bolo Maeglin and based on the story of the real Gilberte de Courgenay (actually Gilberte Montavon), who was a waitress in a hotel in Courgenay, a small town near the Swiss-French border. She served thousands of Swiss soldiers that were stationed in Courgenay during the First World War, when the neutral Switzerland had to protect its borders. Hanns In der Gand made the song ''La petite Gilberte de Gourgenay'' by Robert Lustenberger and Oskar Portmann from the Winter 1915/16 very famous across Switzerland. The popularity of this song quickly resulted in Gilberte becoming an idol for the soldats that had to keep watch far from home and their families. Gilbertese (), also known as Kiribati (sometimes ''Kiribatese'' or ''Tungaru''), is an Austronesian language spoken mainly in Kiribati. It belongs to the Micronesian branch of the Oceanic languages. The word ''Kiribati'', the current name of the islands, is the local adaptation of the European name "Gilberts" to Gilbertese phonology. Early European visitors, including Commodore John Byron, whose ships happened on Nikunau in 1765, had named some of the islands the Kingsmill or Kings Mill Islands or for the Northern group ''les îles Mulgrave'' in French but in 1820 they were renamed, in French, ''les îles Gilbert'' by Admiral Adam Johann von Krusenstern, after Captain Thomas Gilbert, who, along with Captain John Marshall, had passed through some of these islands in 1788. Gilberte Roca
Gilberte Roca née Cau (18 February 1911, Cailhau — 26 July 2004, Nîmes) was a French Communist politician and member of the Resistance. Biography Originally from a poor family of agricultural workers, Gilberte Roca was an early adopter of politics. She joined the French Communist Party (PCF) and the ''Union des jeunes filles'' ''de France'' (UJFF) in 1934. She lived in Capestang then moved to Nîmes. It was then that she became a shorthand typist for the Gard departmental union of the General Confederation of Labour and married Edmond Roca — a communist figure of the region. During the Second World War, Gilberte joined the Resistance, while her husband, Edmond, was taken prisoner from 1940 to 1945. At the end of the war, she became the departmental councilor for ''Canton de Nîmes-3''. Then, in 1946, she was elected for MP for Gard at the National Constituent Assembly. Françoise Gilberte Périer (1 January 1620 – 25 April 1687) was a French biographer and the older sister of Blaise Pascal whose biography she wrote. Biography Françoise Gilberte Pascal was the eldest of three surviving children born to mathematician Étienne Pascal (1588–1651) and his wife Antoinette Pascal, nee Bégon (1596–1626). Her paternal grandfather was Martin Pascal, treasurer of France. When Gilberte's mother died in 1626, her father moved the family to Paris and employed a governess, Louise Delfault, to bring up his children. Gilberte Montavon
Gilberte Montavon de Courgenay (20 March 1896 – 2 May 1957) was a Swiss waitress who became a national symbol of Spiritual national defence, spiritual national defense during World War I and World War II. She entertained Swiss Army troops at the Hôtel de Gare in Courgenay, which was owned by her family, and became popular with the soldiers. In 1917, the composer and folklorist Hanns In der Gand gave a concert at the hotel and performed his new song ''La petite Gilberte'', written about Montavon. The song was adopted by the army to boost morale throughout the war. Montavon inspired Rudolph Bolo Mäglin's 1939 novel ''Gilberte de Courgenay'' and his play of the same name. Two films, August Kern's ''Marguerite et les soldates'' in 1940 and Franz Schnyder's ''Gilberte de Courgenay'' in 1941, were based on her life.
