George Scott (footballer, Born 1865)
George (Geordie) Scott (1865 – 1937) was a Scottish people, Scottish association football, footballer. He is best known for his time at Heart of Midlothian F.C., Hearts, from 1889 until 1897, helping them to victory in the 1890–91 Scottish Cup and 1894–95 Scottish Division One, 1894/95 league title. He was also a long-standing member and president of Bishopbriggs Bowling Club. Life and playing career Born in Scoonie, Scott moved with his family to Glasgow at a young age and found work with Cowlairs railway works, Cowlairs Railway Works. Initially playing for local sides Towerhill and Northern F.C., Northern, Scott was signed by Cowlairs F.C., Cowlairs in 1882, before moving to Heart of Midlothian F.C., Hearts in 1889. Scoonie is a settlement and parish in Fife, Scotland, the parish contains the town of Leven. Scottish Football League
The Scottish Football League (SFL) was a league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland.One club, Berwick Rangers, is based in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is located approximately 4 km south of the Anglo-Scottish border. From its foundation in 1890 until the breakaway Scottish Premier League (SPL) was formed in 1998, the SFL was the top level of football in Scotland. John McCartney (footballer, Born 1866)
William John McCartney (1866 – 18 January 1933) was a Scottish footballer and football manager whose career lasted from 1884 to 1929. Playing career A native of Glasgow, McCartney began as a full back with Cartvale at the age of 18, later playing for Thistle. In 1887 he joined Rangers, staying for two years. before joining Cowlairs. In 1893, he joined Newton Heath, playing 19 league games and scoring once before joining Luton Town in 1894. He helped Luton gain election to the Football League and played in Luton's first-ever league match on 4 September 1897, a 1–1 draw away to Leicester Fosse. He played 27 times that season, leaving at the end of it to join Barnsley. He scored 3 times in 63 league games for Barnsley before retiring in April 1901 to become Barnsley's secretary-manager. Duncan McLean (footballer, Born 1868)
Duncan McLean (20 January 1868 – 17 November 1941) was a Scottish footballer who played for Renton, Everton, Liverpool, St Bernard's and Scotland in the latter years of the 19th century. Club career McLean played for Renton Union and Renton, before signing for Everton in 1890 when the Dunbartonshire club were expelled from the Scottish Football League for matters relating to professionalism. He played a bit part in their first league title triumph in the following season. The departure of Andrew Hannah to Renton that summer gave McLean his chance to establish himself as the regular first choice right back at the club, although the club were unable to repeat the form of the previous year, finishing fifth. Dumbarton (; also sco, Dumbairton; ) is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, on the north bank of the River Clyde where the River Leven flows into the Clyde estuary. Leitch Keir
Leitch Keir (22 June 1861 – 29 June 1922) was a Scottish footballer who played for Renton, Dumbarton and Scotland. Having won the Scottish Cup with Dumbarton in 1883, he was the sole member of that team still with the club when they were joint champions of the inaugural Scottish Football League in 1891, becoming the first player to claim medals from both competitions; the distinction was almost shared by all his teammates, but they had lost the 1891 Scottish Cup Final three months earlier. The ''Sons of the Rock'' went on to win the title outright in 1892. Keir ceased playing regularly in 1893, but returned for one cup appearance four years later. 1902 Ibrox Disaster
The 1902 Ibrox disaster was the collapse of a stand at Ibrox Park (now Ibrox Stadium) in Govan (now part of Glasgow), Scotland. The incident led to the deaths of 25 supporters and injuries to 500 more during an international association football match between Scotland and England on 5 April 1902 as part of the 1901–02 British Home Championship. Ibrox Park had completed construction less than three years before the incident and was hosting its first international fixture, with the crowd estimated to be over 68,000. The match was the first time that the ground had been used at more than half capacity since its opening. Scotland entered the game needing only to avoid defeat to win the British Home Championship title. During the first half of the match, a section of the newly built West Tribune Stand collapsed, dropping between 200 and 300 people to the concrete floor below.
