George Read (New Zealand Politician)
George Edward Read (1814/1815 – 23 February 1878) was a British mariner, trader, landowner and politician in Poverty Bay, New Zealand. Known as Captain Read, he settled in Gisborne after a career in whaling, setting up a store in what was then a small town. Early life Read was born in Mendlesham, Suffolk, England, in either 1814 or 1815. Little is known of his early life. He came to the Pacific in the 1830s on a whaling ship, and worked on trading ships. Poverty Bay Read first arrived in the settlement of Tūranga in 1844. Mendlesham
Mendlesham is a village in Suffolk with 1,407 inhabitants at the 2011 census. It lies north east of Stowmarket and from London. The place-name 'Mendlesham' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as ''Melnesham'' and ''Mundlesham''. The name means 'Myndel's village'. Mendlesham is known for its large street fair which is held on every May Day bank holiday. George Morris (New Zealand Politician)
George Bentham Morris (1839 – 16 April 1903) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament from the Gisborne and Bay of Plenty regions of New Zealand. Early life Morris was born in Oatlands, Van Diemen's Land in 1839, the son of Susan Emma Waudby and Reverend George Sculthorpe Morris. He joined the marines after leaving school, and eventually arrived in New Zealand in 1870, settling in Auckland. Political career Morris represented the Tauranga electorate in the Auckland Provincial Council from 12 November 1873 until the abolition of provincial government on 31 October 1876. He represented the East Coast electorate in the House of Representatives from 1876 (when he was declared elected on a petition) to 1879, when he was defeated. William Kelly (New Zealand Politician)
William Kelly (1840 – 19 September 1907) was an Irish migrant to New Zealand, and became a businessman, soldier and politician. Early life Kelly was born in 1840 in County Louth, Ireland, and emigrated to New Zealand as a young man in 1863. In 1864 he became a contractor for the troops stationed in Auckland, then in the following year went to Ōpōtiki and set up a shipping business between Ōpōtiki and Auckland. In 1868 he became captain of the Bay of Plenty cavalry corps and fought in the New Zealand Wars. Political career He was a member of Auckland Provincial Council, representing the Pensioner Settlements (18 November 1872 – 3 October 1873) and Opotiki (18 November 1873 – 31 October 1876) electorates. In 1871, he was elected to the House of Representatives for the East Coast electorate. He held that seat until the end of the parliamentary term in 1875.
