George Carter (musician)
George Carter was an American blues musician, who recorded four songs for Paramount Records in 1929. Very little is known of his life. Believed to have hailed from Atlanta, Georgia, United States, he played a twelve-string guitar, common in the Atlanta area, occasionally using an open tuning and a slide. Some blues scholars believe that "George Carter" may actually be a pseudonym for another Atlanta blues singer at the time, Charley Lincoln. George Lafayette Carter
George Lafayette Carter (1857–1936) was an American entrepreneur known as "the empire builder of southwest Virginia." His ventures led to the development and modernization of many parts of the southern Appalachian region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Biography George Lafayette Carter was born on January 10, 1857, in Hillsville, Virginia. The first of nine children, he learned at a young age that farm life was not suitable for his ambitions. As a child, he read many great works including The Bible and Benjamin Franklin's autobiography. Carter worked at the Hillsville General Store before pursuing a career of selling iron ore properties with the Wythe Lead and Zinc Company in Austinville, Virginia. He then found work with the Dora Furnace Company in Pulaski, Virginia, buying small mines throughout the area to provide coke for the furnaces. George Ethelbert Carter
George Ethelbert Carter, was the first Canadian-born black judge. George Ethelbert Carter was born in Toronto on Aug. 1, 1921. He was the oldest of 14 children born to John and Louise Carter, who came to Toronto from Barbados just after World War I. Carter completed his undergraduate studies at Trinity College, at the University of Toronto, and graduated in 1944. He was then called up for active service in World War II and was on his way to Europe when the war ended. A graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School in 1948, Carter had his own law firm and practised in the areas of real estate, criminal and family law for 31 years. He was appointed an Ontario provincial court judge in 1979 and later served with the Ontario Court of Justice for 16 years. He worked as a porter to pay his tuition to law school, and served with the Canadian Army in World War II. He was instrumental in establishing Legal Aid in the Province of Ontario. George Bertram Carter (1 March 1896 – January 1986) was an English architect. Carter attended Blackheath School of Art between 1911 and 1915 and then the Royal College of Art under William Lethaby and Arthur Beresford Pite between 1915 and 1917. George Carter (engineer)
Wilfred George Carter CBE FRAeS (9 March 1889 – 27 February 1969) was a British engineer, who was the chief designer at Glosters from 1937. He was awarded the C.B.E. in 1947 and was appointed Technical Director of Gloster Aircraft in 1948 remaining on the board of directors until 1954. He continued to serve Glosters for a number of years after his retirement in a consultancy role until 1958. He designed the first British jet aircraft. Career Carter had his apprenticeship with W. H. Allen Sons and Co. Ltd of Bedford from 1906–1912. From 1916-20 he was Chief Draughtsman of Sopwith Aviation Company, then Chief Designer from 1920–1924 of Hawker Engineering Co. George Carter I (17771846), son of Robert "Councillor" Carter the III and Frances Ann Tasker Carter was an American plantation owner most famous for his building of Oatlands Plantation, an estate located in Leesburg, Virginia, and as one of the wealthiest individuals in Virginia's Loudoun County during the early 19th century. Early life George's father Robert Carter III was famous for his manumission of 452 slaves during his lifetime and for being an outspoken critic of slavery in colonial America. William Carter (composer)
William Carter (7 December 1838 – 1917) was an English composer, conductor, and organist. He began a lengthy career as an organist at mainly churches in London at the age of nine. In 1859 and 1860 he spent one year in Canada as the organist at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Quebec, during which time he staged what was possibly the largest Handel Festival in Canada at that time. As a composer he is known for his liturgical anthems for chorus and organ, sacred works for organ, the oratorio ''Placida, the Christian Martyr'' (1872), and ''Cantata Domino in E'' (1891).
