George Washington Ball (June 7, 1847 – July 18, 1915) was an American lawyer and politician from the state of Iowa. He served in the Iowa General Assembly as Representative of Johnson County and later as State Senator. He also served on the city council of Iowa City from 1881 to 1883, and was mayor of the city from 1905 to 1909. Ball was born near Fairfield, Iowa, on June 7, 1847. His early life was spent upon his father's farm near the place of his birth where he remained until and he was educated in Fairfield public and private schools. He entered the Law Department of the State University of Iowa in 1868, graduated in 1869, and was admitted to the practice of law in the State of Iowa on December 15 of the same year. The Ball brothers (Lucius, William, Edmund, Frank, and George) were five American industrialists and philanthropists who established a manufacturing business in New York and Indiana in the 1880s that was renamed the Ball Corporation in 1969. Sir George Joseph Ball, KBE (1885–1961) was a British barrister, intelligence officer, political operator, government administrator, and industrialist. Sir George Thomas Thalben-Ball (18 June 1896 – 18 January 1987) was an Australian organist and composer who spent almost all his life in England. Early life George Thomas Ball (he later took the additional name of "Thalben") was born in Sydney, Australia, where his father George Charles Ball had gone for business. His mother was Mary Hannah (née Spear). He had a younger brother. His parents were both of Cornish origin. He studied organ and piano at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London, which he entered at the unusually young age of 14. George Wildman Ball (December 21, 1909 – May 26, 1994) was an American diplomat and banker. He served in the management of the US State Department from 1961 to 1966 and is remembered by most as the only cabinet member of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson who was a major dissenter against the escalation of the Vietnam War. Ball advised against deploying U.S. combat forces, as he believed it would lead the United States into an unwinnable war and result in a prolonged conflict. Instead, he argued that the United States should prioritize allocating its resources to Europe rather than engaging in expensive military ventures. However, he refused to publicize his doubts. He helped determine American policy regarding trade expansion, Congo, the Multilateral Force, de Gaulle's France, Israel and the rest of the Middle East, and the Iranian Revolution. George Ball (entomologist)
George Eugene Ball (25 September 1926 – 12 January 2019) was an American entomologist and expert in ground beetles (Carabidae). Born in Detroit, Detroit, Michigan, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, where he served in the Battle of Okinawa. He earned his B.A. from Cornell University in 1949 and his M.S. from the University of Alabama in 1950. He returned to Cornell where he earned his PhD in 1954, and that same year joined the University of Alberta, becoming a full professor in 1965. He went on to serve as the entomology department's chair (1974–84) before retiring in 1992. He was a past president of the Entomological Society of Canada and The Coleopterists Society, received the 1980 Gold Medal from the Entomological Society of Canada for outstanding achievement in entomology, and was a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America.
