Juan Andrés Gelly Martínez (2 August 1790 – 24 August 1856) was a Paraguayan lawyer, politician and diplomat who played an important role in the Plata region's independence and relations, and in the international recognition of Paraguay's independence specifically. Biography Early life Gelly was born in Pirayú in 1790, when Paraguay was still part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, a Spanish colony. His father, a Catalan bureaucrat named Juan Gelly, had come from Barcelona to Asunción, where he'd married María del Carmen Martínez de Ibarra y Quiñonez from the colonial elite, a descendant of conquistador Domingo Martínez de Irala. His father became a landowner, and Andrés Gelly was sent to study in Buenos Aires, at the Real Colegio de San Carlos (the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires's predecessor). Dave Gelly MBE (born 28 January 1938) is a British jazz critic. A long-standing contributor to ''The Observer'', he was named Jazz Writer of the Year in the 1999 British Jazz Awards. Gelly is also a jazz saxophonist and broadcaster, presenting a number of shows for BBC Radio 2 including ''Night Owls'' for much of the 1980s. Juan Andrés Gelly Y Obes
Juan Andrés Gelly y Obes (1815-1904) was an Argentine general and politician. He was an advocate for the reform of the Constitution of Argentina in 1860, chief of staff of the Argentine Army during the Paraguayan War as well as a personal friend of Bartolomé Mitre. Biography He was a teenager even when his father, Juan Andrés Gelly had to go into exile in Montevideo and taking his son with him due to the support he had given to the dictatorship of General Juan Lavalle and his opposition to Juan Manuel de Rosas. He then joined the defense against the siege that that city suffered for eight years, reaching the rank of colonel and head of a regiment of Argentine exiles. For some time after, he was exiled in Brazil, where he managed an estancia. During his stay in Montevideo, he established a close friendship with Bartolomé Mitre but, unlike Mitre, returned to Buenos Aires in 1855.
