Gay Hermit
Gay Hermit (1883–1906?) was a British-bred thoroughbred racehorse and influential sire in Argentina. Background Gay Hermit was a bay stallion bred by J. Crowther and M. Harrison, sired by Hermit out of Doll Tearsheet, who would later produce Epsom Derby winner Merry Hampton. Gay Hermit had a "very sound constitution" and was considered very handsome. Gay Hermit was sold for 800 guineas as a yearling. Racing career As a two-year-old in 1885, Gay Hermit was considered "a useful second-class horse". He was engaged in 69 races and won 7, earning £4,930. After winning the Woodcote Stakes, Gay Hermit was soundly beaten in the Whitsuntide Plate by Philosophy. In the Triennial Stakes, Gay Hermit was the only horse to face Philosophy, and he upset her and won by three-quarters of a length. Hermit (horse)
Hermit (1864–1890), sometimes known, incorrectly as "''The'' Hermit", was a 19th-century British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from April 1866 until July 1869 he ran 23 times and won eight races. He was a leading two-year-old in 1866 and won the 1867 Epsom Derby, despite breaking down in training shortly before the race. He continued to race until the age of five, but never recovered his form after running three times in three days at Doncaster in September 1867. After his retirement he had a long and highly successful career at stud. Breeding Hermit was a "yellowish" chestnut stallion standing about high with a narrow white blaze. He was by the stallion Newminster who won the St Leger in 1851 before going on to a successful stud career in which his other notable winners included Musjid (Epsom Derby) and Lord Clifden (St Leger, Champion sire). Haras Ojo de Agua was a Thoroughbred racing, Thoroughbred racehorse breeding and training farm in Argentina and is considered to be "one of the foremost Argentine stud farms of all time." History The land for Haras Ojo de Agua was purchased by Pedro Luro from the Argentine Rural Society in 1868. The name Ojo de Agua, meaning 'the eye of the water', was based on the natural spring on the property that produced 1,800,000 liters of water per day. In 1878, several Thoroughbred mares were imported from England to start the farm's breeding program. Gay Hermit was the first stallion imported to stand stud at Haras Ojo de Agua. Other well regarded stallions were later purchased and imported for the stud, including Cyllene (horse), Cyllene, purchased for $125,000, and Polar Star, purchased for $90,000.
