Bongzilla is an American stoner metal band that formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 1995. They released their debut extended play, ''Mixed Bag'', the following year through Rhetoric Records. Much of Bongzilla's lyrics are centered around cannabis use and similar themes. Following a six-year hiatus, the band reformed in 2015 and embarked upon a North American tour. The band's most recent album, ''Dab City'', was released in 2023 through the label Heavy Psych Sounds. Stoner Rock
Stoner rock, also known as stoner metal or stoner doom, is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of doom metal with psychedelic rock and acid rock. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by Kyuss and Sleep. Characteristics Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features a heavily distorted, groove-laden bass-heavy sound, melodic vocals, and "retro" production. Due to the similarities between stoner and sludge metal, there is often a crossover between the two genres. This hybrid has traits of both styles, but generally lacks stoner metal's laid back atmosphere and its usage of psychedelia. Bands such as Weedeater, High on Fire and Electric Wizard creatively fuse both styles. Sludge metal (also known as sludge doom or simply sludge) is an Extreme metal, extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that combines elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. The genre generally includes slow tempos, down-tuned guitars and nihilistic lyrics discussing poverty, drug addiction and pollution. The sound of sludge metal has its origins in California hardcore punk bands in the early-to-mid-1980s like Black Flag (band), Black Flag, Flipper (band), Flipper and Fang (band), Fang, who began slowing their tempos and embracing the influence of Black Sabbath. Relapse Records is an American independent record label based in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. It was founded by Matthew F. Jacobson in 1990. The label features many grindcore, death metal, metalcore and sludge metal artists. History The label was started by Matthew F. Jacobson in August 1990 in his parents' basement in Aurora, Colorado. The gateway drug effect (alternatively, stepping-stone theory, escalation hypothesis, or progression hypothesis) is a comprehensive catchphrase for the often observed effect that the use of a psychoactive substance is coupled to an increased probability of the use of further substances.
