Garfield Building (Los Angeles, California)
The Garfield Building is a thirteen-story Art Deco style historic structure in Los Angeles, California. Designed by American architect Claud Beelman, construction lasted from 1928 to 1930. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Architecture and history In addition to the detailed ornamentation around the street-level entry way, the Garfield Building has an art deco lobby. It was a working office building for many years, but has been empty since its sale in 1991. The building has of rentable space for filming or other events. Located just off of South Hill Street at 403 West 8th Street, it is in the downtown Jewelry District, which in recent years, has had a revival, with lofts, artist's work spaces, and new shops, restaurants, and businesses around the Garfield. The Garfield Building was located at 26 Court Street, at Remsen Street, in Brooklyn, New York. It was built by contractor William Lamb, who was originally from Glasgow, Scotland. Together with his brother Thomas, the builders began their careers with the firm W&T Lamb, starting in 1861. The seven-story Garfield Building was offered in an auction by the Brooklyn Real Estate Exchange in January 1906. The lot covered 100 feet by 150 feet on Remsen Street. It was near Borough Hall, the court house, Temple Bar, Hall of Records, the borough's first subway station, and the heart of the financial center. The Garfield Building is a high-rise building on the corner of Euclid Avenue and E. 6th Street in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. It was the first steel frame skyscraper constructed in the city. The original building The edifice was designed by Henry Ives Cobb and built in 1893 by Harry Augustus Garfield and James Rudolph Garfield, sons of President James A. Garfield. The ten-story structure was the first steel frame office building erected in the city. The facade on E. 6th Street was long, taking up the entire block between Euclid and Vincent Avenues, but just on Euclid Avenue. Patrons could access the upper floors via a large marble staircase or four elevators. All the upper floors featured Italian marble wainscoting. Garfield Township Hall is a two-story historic building located near Beresford in rural Clay County, South Dakota. It served the now-defunct Garfield Township in Clay County. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. History The township of Garfield was established in 1880, at a time when the surrounding region of Dakota Territory was being settled and developed from early trading posts and forts along the Missouri River. Constructed around 1908, the township hall created a central space for nearby pioneers to conduct business, instead of having to hold events and transactions in their private residences. It served variably as a polling place, a theater, a local government office, and a public meeting space. Around 1936, the Works Progress Administration added a basement and renovated the building's facade to its present appearance. The James A. Garfield Memorial is a memorial for and the final resting place of assassinated President James A. Garfield, located in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. The memorial, which began construction in October 1885 and was dedicated on May 30, 1890, exhibits a combination of Byzantine, Gothic, and Romanesque Revival architectural styles. Garfield, former First Lady Lucretia Garfield, and two other members of the Garfield family are entombed in the crypt level of the monument. The monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Site selection President James A. Garfield, a resident of nearby Mentor, Ohio, was shot in Washington, D.C., on July 2, 1881. He died on September 19, 1881.
