Gareth Roberts (physicist)
Sir Gareth Gwyn Roberts (16 May 1940 – 6 February 2007) was a Welsh physicist specialising in semiconductors and molecular electronics, who was influential in British science policy through his chairmanship of several academic bodies and his two reports on the future supply of scientists and how university research should be assessed. He was knighted in 1997 for his services to higher education. Academic and public service career Born in Penmaenmawr, Caernarvonshire, North Wales, he attended John Bright Grammar School. He studied physics to PhD level at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, graduating in 1964. Following a post at the New University of Ulster, he was appointed Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Durham in 1976, where he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1984. Gareth John Roberts (born 15 January 1959, in Pont-Lliw) is a former international Wales rugby union player. He was in the Wales squad for the 1987 Rugby World Cup The 1987 Rugby World Cup was the first Rugby World Cup. Gareth John Pritchard Roberts (born 5 June 1968) is a British television screenwriter, novelist and columnist best known for his work related to the science-fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. He has also worked on various comedy series and soap operas. Early life Roberts studied drama at King Alfred's College (now the University of Winchester) and Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University). He has also worked as a clerk at the Court of Appeal. Career Roberts has worked on some of the most popular British soap operas, including Channel 4's now-defunct '' Brookside'' as a scriptwriter (1999–2003), and as a story associate on ITV's ''Coronation Street'' in 1997. In 1998 he worked as a script editor on ITV's other long-running soap, ''Emmerdale'', moving across to write several episodes himself the following year. Gareth Roberts (footballer)
Gareth Wyn Roberts (born 6 February 1978) is a Welsh former footballer. He played more than 600 league games in a 22-year career which has taken in eight different clubs, and was capped nine times for Wales. He was part of the Tranmere Rovers side which reached the club's first major cup final in 2000. Club career Early career Roberts started his career as a trainee at Liverpool and played alongside future England internationals Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher in the 1996 FA Youth Cup winning side, who beat a West Ham United side featuring Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand. Roberts failed to make the grade at Anfield, however, and was released by the club which led to him being signed up by Ronnie Whelan, then manager of Greek side Panionios. Gareth Owen Roberts FRS FLSW (born 1964) is a statistician and applied probabilist. He is Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics and Director of the Centre for Research in Statistical Methodology (CRiSM) at the University of Warwick. He is an established authority on the stability of Markov chains, especially applied to Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) theory methodology for a wide range of latent statistical models with applications in spatial statistics, infectious disease epidemiology and finance. Gareth "Jaffa" Roberts (6 August 1987 – 16 June 2012) was a rally co-driver from Carmarthen in Wales, who was killed in an accident while competing in the Targa Florio Rally in Sicily while sitting alongside Irish driver Craig Breen. The crash happened during the eighth stage of the rally when their Peugeot 207 went off the road about five miles from the start of the Cefalu leg. A guard rail entered the car on the right side, where Welshman Roberts, 24, was seated. At his funeral, former co-driver, Welsh TV broadcaster and friend Howard Davies eulogised: "There is no doubt in my mind that Jaffa would have become a World Champion co-driver. He had all the qualities required and more. His personality warmed rooms and his massive beaming smile turned negative situations into positive ones. Gareth David Roberts is a British Liberal Democrat politician, serving as the Member of the London Assembly (AM) for South West since 2024 and the leader of Richmond Upon Thames Council since 2018. He currently serves as the London Liberal Democrats' spokesperson on Police and Crime, the Environment and the budget process on the London Assembly.
