Gallery MOMO
Gallery MOMO is a South African contemporary art gallery, which represents South African and international artists at its exhibition spaces in Johannesburg and Cape Town. History Gallery MOMO was founded in Johannesburg in 2002 by the South African art dealer and collector, Monna Mokoena. In 2015, the organization opened a second branch in Cape Town. Writing in 'Art and the Global Economy', Kai Lossgott identified Gallery MOMO as still in 2017, 'South Africa's only black-owned gallery' and recounted that it had 'paved the way for South Africa's return to the Venice Biennial'. In 2018, Ishani Chetty, writing for the lifestyle and listings magazine 'CapeTown Etc.' ranked Gallery MOMO as one of the city's top five 'must visit' art venues. Parktown North
Parktown North is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. The suburb has many old colonial-style houses, and manages to maintain a village atmosphere, despite being near to one of the busiest roads in the city, Jan Smuts Avenue. An art gallery is a room or a building in which visual art is displayed. Johannes Phokela
Johannes Phokela (born 1966) is a South African painter and sculptor. Background Johannes Phokela was born in Soweto, South Africa in 1966 and trained under Durant Sihlali. When Phokela was a child he witnessed the Soweto uprising and later created memorials regarding the event, including a statue of Teboho MacDonald Mashinini on the grounds of Morris Isaacson High School unveiled on 1 May 2010, and a large sculptural mural of a book sitting in a lot opposite of the school. Phokela began his studies at the Federated Union of Black Artists, Johannesburg before concluding his studies at the Royal College of Art, London. Phokela has lived and worked in both London and Johannesburg. Mary Sibande
Mary Sibande (born 1982) is a South African artist based in Johannesburg. Her art consists of sculptures, paintings, photography, and design. Sibande uses these mediums and techniques to help depict the human form and explore the construction of identity in a postcolonial South African context. In addition, Sibande focuses on using her work to show her personal experiences while living through Apartheid. Her art also attempts to critique stereotypical depictions of women, particularly black women. Early life Sibande was born in Barberton in apartheid South Africa and was raised by her grandmother. Her mother was a domestic worker herself, and her father was in the South African Army. She did not know her father when she was younger but got to know him when she was a teenager.
