Gale Of 1878
The Gale of 1878 was an intense Category 2 hurricane which caused extensive damage from Cuba to New England in October 1878. Believed to be the strongest storm to hit the Washington - Baltimore region since hurricane records began in 1851, a complete record exists of this hurricane from its formation to dissipation. The city of Baltimore was flooded by the Gale. Washington D.C. experienced both flooding and tree destruction. Meteorological history A tropical storm formed off the coast of Jamaica on October 18, 1878, and moved nearly due north. On October 20, the storm reached hurricane status and on October 21, the hurricane struck Cuba. The damage in Cuba was only minor and three schooners sank. List Of New England Hurricanes
A New England hurricane is a tropical cyclone originating in the Atlantic Ocean that affects the U.S. states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and/or Maine. Geography and climatology mean that the vast majority of tropical cyclone strikes to the New England region occur in Connecticut, Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts. Since record keeping began for Atlantic tropical cyclones in 1851 there have been approximately 30 tropical cyclones to strike New England direct. 1876 San Felipe Hurricane
The San Felipe Hurricane was the second tropical cyclone of the 1876 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm was first observed east of the Leeward Islands on September 12, later intensifying to a Category 3 hurricane on the modern-day Saffir–Simpson scale while approaching Puerto Rico. In the upcoming days, the storm would make landfall on Hispaniola and Cuba, while also at hurricane intensity. Weakening to a tropical storm, it crossed the island until emerging over central Cuba, and passing just east of Florida. The storm re-intensified into a hurricane and struck near Wilmington, North Carolina, as Category 1 hurricane.
