Gabriela Mistral Mine
Gabriela Mistral mine or Gaby is an open-pit copper mine in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. It lies at an altitude of 2,660 meters above sea level in the inland commune of Sierra Gorda. Codelco owns and operates the mine. In 2023 it produced 105,800 tons of copper, but it has an estimated maximum production potential of 170,000 tons of copper each year. The mine was owned and operated by Minera Gaby S.A., a subsidiary of Codelco, until 2012 when it was incorporated directly to Codelco. Sierra Gorda, Chile
Sierra Gorda is a Chilean commune in Antofagasta Province, Antofagasta Region. The total population was 1,516 as of the 2012 census. The two main settlements are the villages of Sierra Gorda (pop. 428) and Baquedano (pop. 825). The Sierra Gorda copper mine is located 2km north-west of the village of Sierra Gorda. Due to the mining business, Sierra Gorda has the eighth highest average household income in the country ( PPP US$34,842 in 2006). Lucila Godoy Alcayaga (; 7 April 1889 – 10 January 1957), known by her pseudonym Gabriela Mistral (), was a Chilean poet-diplomat, educator, and Catholic. She was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order or Third Franciscan order. She was the first Latin American author to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945, "for her lyric poetry which, inspired by powerful emotions, has made her name a symbol of the idealistic aspirations of the entire Latin American world".
