Félicité Carrel was an Italian mountaineer, known for her 1867 attempt to climb Mount Matterhorn The , ; ; ; or ; ; . is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the Main chain of the Alps, main watershed and border between Italy and Switzerland. It is a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, .... Biography Carrel was the daughter of Italian mountaineer Jean-Antoine Carrel. In 1867 Carrel and her father joined climbers Caesar Carrel, J.J. and J.P. Maquignaz in an attempt to scale Mount Matterhorn. Carrel climbed to 400 feet from the summit, but was prohibited from going further by her skirts which had caught in the wind and returned with her father while the others continued on. Félicité Fernig
Félicité Fernig (1770–1841) and Théophile Fernig (1775–1819), known as the Sœurs Fernig (Fernig sisters), were two sisters who dressed as men and enlisted in the French Revolutionary Army during the French Revolutionary Wars. They were allowed to remain in service after their sex was discovered and became celebrities who were frequently mentioned in the contemporary French press. Biographies Félicité and Théophile were born to Marie Adrienne Bassez and Sergeant François Louis Joseph Fernig, who served in the cavalry and educated his daughters in the use of weapons. When the Austrians invaded France in 1792, the sisters dressed as men, enlisted in the army, and were admired for their courage. When their sex were discovered, they were allowed to remain in service, which happened in at least some cases during this period. Félicité Pricet (born around 1745 in Châtillon-sur-Sèvre – executed on 18 January 1794 in Avrillé) was one of the French Catholic martyrs of Angers, who were massacred during the War in the Vendée for supporting the anti-royalist rebels during the French Revolution. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1984 and her Feast Day is celebrated on 18 January. Biography A laywoman, originally from Châtillon-sur-Sèvre, Deux-Sèvres, in Poitou, she was a devout Catholic and follower of the rebels of the French Revolution. Historian Jean-Clément Martin has reported on her trial; she was executed because she went to services conducted by Catholic priests supporting the rebellion and because she had an "unbearable devotion" to her faith.
