Fort Mitchell is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Russell County, Alabama, Russell County, Alabama, United States. The settlement developed around a garrisoned fort intended to provide defense for the area during the Creek War (1813–14). Fort Mitchell is about 10 miles south of Phenix City, Alabama and Columbus, Georgia; Fort Benning lies on the opposite side of the Chattahoochee River from Fort Mitchell. The community is the home of the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, established in 1987 for interment of all US veterans. Fort Mitchell, Florida
Fort Michell, located in today's Alachua County, was the capital of the short-lived Republic of East Florida during the Patriot War of 1814. Only one building was built, a 25-foot meterssquare, two-story blockhouse. It was located about one mile .6 kmfrom the city limits of modern Micanopy, Florida. Its precise location is not known. In January 1814, a group of soldier-settlers erected a two-story blockhouse and dubbed it Fort Mitchell, after the Governor of Georgia, David Mitchell. General Buckner F. Harris declared Fort Mitchell to be the capital of the Republic of East Florida. Fort Mitchell, Nebraska
Fort Mitchell, Nebraska, was an Army fort in service from 1864 to 1867, located in present-day Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska. First constructed northwest of Mitchell Pass as Camp Shuman, Fort Mitchell was manned in the autumn of 1864 by Company "H" of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry under Captain J. S. Shuman. It was named in honor of General Robert B. Mitchell, who ordered the establishment of this post to protect traffic along the Great Platte River Road between Julesburg and South Pass and the nearby Scott's Bluff stage station. Fort Mitchell was abandoned after the Fort Laramie peace conference of 1867. The ground plan of Fort Mitchell consisted of a stockade with a sally port, firing loopholes, and a sentinel tower. Today no trace of the sod structure remains at the site west of the North Platte River bend northwest of Scott's Bluff. Fort Mitchel is an American Civil War fortification at 65 Skull Creek Drive in Hilton Head, South Carolina. History The fort was built in 1861 by Union Army forces as part of the defenses of a coaling station and ship maintenance facility at Seabrook Landing. It was named for Brigadier General Ormsby M. Mitchel, and is a rare surviving example of a semi-permanent fortification built by the Union in the South Carolina Low Country.
