The Embassy of the United States, Taipei () is a former United States diplomatic mission in Zhongshan District, Taipei, Taiwan. The building current houses the Taipei Film House () as a movie theater. History Empire of Japan At the end of the 19th century, flourishing commerce in tea and camphor led many Western foreign countries such as the United States, the Netherlands, and Britain to establish consulates and trade offices in the Dadaocheng district of Taihoku Prefecture. The United States built its consulate at this location during the Japanese rule in 1926 as the American Consulate in Taihoku. Following World War II, it served as the US Ambassador's residence. Zhongshan District ( Chinese: 中山區) is an administrative district of Taipei City, named after Sun Yat-sen, better known in Chinese as "Sun Zhongshan". May 24 Incident
The May 24 incident (), also called the Liu Ziran incident () and the Reynolds riot, was a 1957 international incident between the United States and Taiwan (ROC) that started over the killing of an ROC national and a court-martial conducted by U.S. military personnel in Taiwan, resulting in protests including separate mob attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Taipei, the United States Information Service buildings and a police station. There were other acts of protests prior to, during and after May 24, 1957, across Taiwan and in Taipei that led U.S. government officials behind-the-scenes to refer to these events as "riots" but U.S. officials deliberately spoke of a "riot" to avoid any adverse psychological impact on its alliance with the ROC.
