Football League test matches were a series of post-season association football, football playoffs, play-off matches organised by the English Football League, Football League, to determine the membership of each division, between the worst finishers of the Football League First Division, First Division and the best of the Football League Second Division, Second Division. They were first contested at the end of the 1892–93 Football League, 1892–93 season, following the inaugural season of the Second Division, and were replaced with automatic promotion and relegation from 1898–99 Football League, 1898–99. Unlike the modern-day English Football League play-offs, which is only contested between the four teams below the automatic promotion places in each division, test matches involved the bottom teams of the First Division and the top teams of the Second Division going head-to-head. The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional association football, football clubs from England and Wales. The 1895– 96 season was the eighth season of The Football League. Final league tables Beginning in the 1894–95 season, clubs finishing level on points were separated according to goal average (goals scored divided by goals conceded). In case one or more teams had the same goal difference, this system favoured those teams who had scored fewer goals. The goal average system was eventually scrapped beginning with the 1976–77 season. Athletic Ground (Cobridge)
The Athletic Ground also known as Cobridge Stadium was a football stadium and greyhound racing stadium, located in Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent. Football The ground was home to Port Vale for 27 years and hosted twelve Football League seasons. It was located opposite the church on Waterloo Road, directly on the Hanley and Burslem tram line. The site was obtained from the Sandbach Charity on a 21-year lease. It was surrounded by a cinder track for athletics and cycling, hence the name. On the north side was a 1,000-capacity grandstand, three shower baths and a gymnasium. They left the stadium for the Old Recreation Ground in 1913, and it was demolished in the 1980s after decades of use for amateur football. A Mercedes garage was later built near the site. Filbert Street was a football stadium in Leicester, England, which served as the home of Leicester City F.C. from 1891 until 2002. Although officially titled the City Business Stadium in the early 1990s, it remained known almost exclusively by its address, like many English football stadiums. 1894–95 Football League
The 1894– 95 season was the seventh season of The Football League. During the first five seasons of the league the re-election process had concerned the clubs which finished in the bottom four of the league, but as of the 1894–95 season the re-election requirement was reduced to the last three clubs in Division Two. However, as Lincoln City (fourth from last) and Walsall Town Swifts (third from last) both finished with 20 points, they were both subjected to the re-election process, and Walsall eventually resigned from the league. After this, and until the 1976–77 season, goal average (explained below) was used to determine a club's exact position and there were no more anomalies in the re-election processes. Goal average was calculated by dividing the goals scored with goals conceded, and would more appropriately be called goal ratio.
