''Folkocracy'' is a studio album by Rufus Wainwright, released by BMG Rights Management, BMG on June 2, 2023. Composition ''Folkocracy'' was produced by Mitchell Froom. Guests on the album include Anohni, Andrew Bird, David Byrne, Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow, Madison Cunningham, Susanna Hoffs, Chaka Khan, John Legend, Anna McGarrigle, Van Dyke Parks, Nicole Scherzinger, Chris Stills, and Chaim Tannenbaum. Promotion "Down in the Willow Garden" served as the lead single. "Heading for Home" was the second single released. "Harvest" was released as the third single soon after. A video for "Twelve-Thirty (young girls are coming to the canyon)", a short promotional video for "Hush Little Baby" and a live performance video in the studio of "Alone" were released as well in June and July 2023. Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright (born July 22, 1973) is a Canadian and American singer, songwriter, and composer. He has recorded eleven studio albums and numerous tracks on compilations and film soundtracks. He has also written two classical operas and set Shakespeare's sonnets to music for a theatre piece by Robert Wilson (director), Robert Wilson. Susanna Hoffs
Susanna Lee Hoffs (born January 17, 1959) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress. With Debbi Peterson and Vicki Peterson, she founded the Bangles in 1981. Their debut album, ''All Over the Place (The Bangles album), All Over the Place'' (1984), was acclaimed by critics but sold poorly. Their second album, ''Different Light'' (1986), was also warmly received by critics and was certified Music recording certification#Certification thresholds, double-platinum in 1987 and triple-platinum in 1994. Down In The Willow Garden
"Down in the Willow Garden" (Roud 446), also known as "Rose Connelly", is a traditional Appalachian murder ballad. It is written from the perspective of a man facing the gallows for the murder of his lover, to whom he gave poisoned wine, then stabbed, and threw in a river. It originated in the 19th century, probably in Ireland, before becoming established in the United States. The lyrics greatly vary among earlier versions, but professional recordings have stabilized the song in a cut-down form. First professionally recorded in 1927, it was made popular by Charlie Monroe's 1947 version, and it has been recorded dozens of times since then. Origins The song may have derived from Irish sources from the early 19th century. Edward Bunting noted a song by the name "Rose Connolly" in 1811 in Coleraine. Mitchell Froom
Mitchell Froom (born June 29, 1953) is an American musician and record producer. He was a member of the bands Gamma and Latin Playboys, and is the keyboardist for Crowded House. He has produced albums for several artists, including David LaFlamme, Richard Thompson, Los Lobos, Suzanne Vega, and Vonda Shepard. Career Froom began his career as a keyboard player in Sonoma County, California. The band Crossfire featured two keyboard players; Mitchell on one side of the stage and his brother David on the other with Gary Pihl on guitar. He also played keyboards on the Ronnie Montrose-led group Gamma's third album '' Gamma 3'', and the first two solo albums of David LaFlamme (of It's a Beautiful Day fame) titled ''White Bird'' and ''Inside Out''. ''Rufus Does Judy at Capitol Studios'' is a live album by Rufus Wainwright released by BMG on June 10, 2022. The album was recorded at Capitol Studios, during a virtual concert of the same name, which saw Wainwright re-create Judy Garland's live album ''Judy at Carnegie Hall''. The filmed performance premiered on Veeps on June 10, 2021, which would have been Garland's 99th birthday. The concert featured an in-studio duet with Kristin Chenoweth and a virtual duet with Martha Wainwright. Anohni Hegarty (formerly Antony Hegarty), styled as ANOHNI, is an American singer, songwriter, and visual artist. She has presented solo work and as the lead singer of the band Anohni and the Johnsons, formerly known as Antony and the Johnsons. Chaim Tannenbaum is a Canadian folk musician and academic.
