Flughafen Station
Flughafen station is a Nuremberg U-Bahn station, located on the U2, serving Nuremberg Airport. Since 2008 when Berlin Tempelhof Airport shut down, Nuremberg has been the only city in Germany whose airport is connected to the subway network. Located 7 km (5 miles) north of Nuremberg, the U2 transports passengers to/from Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof within 12 minutes. Besides serving the airport, the station is also an interchange point for buses with line 30 going on to Erlangen, serving the technological faculty of the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg and line 33 serving Fürth main station. Both those lines serve the tram interchange point "am Wegfeld" along line 4. University Of Erlangen–Nuremberg
University of Erlangen–Nuremberg (german: Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, FAU) is a public research university in the cities of Erlangen and Nuremberg in Bavaria, Germany. The name Friedrich–Alexander comes from the university's first founder Friedrich, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, and its benefactor Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. FAU is the second largest state university in the state of Bavaria. Clockface Schedule
A clock-face schedule or cyclic schedule is a timetable system under which public transport services run at consistent intervals, as opposed to a timetable that is purely driven by demand and has irregular headways. The name derives from the fact that departures take place at the same time or times during the day. For example, services with a half-hourly frequency might leave at 5:15, 5:45, 6:15, 6:45, 7:15, 7:45 etc. The goal is to enhance the attractiveness and versatility of public transport. Clock-face schedules are easy for passengers to memorise because departure and arrival times occur at consistent intervals, repeating during the day. A regular repeating schedule over the whole day can also improve services during off-peak hours. Headway
Headway is the distance or duration between vehicles in a transit system measured in space or time. The ''minimum headway'' is the shortest such distance or time achievable by a system without a reduction in the speed of vehicles. The precise definition varies depending on the application, but it is most commonly measured as the distance from the tip (front end) of one vehicle to the tip of the next one behind it. It can be expressed as the distance between vehicles, or as time it will take for the trailing vehicle to cover that distance. A "shorter" headway signifies closer spacing between the vehicles. Passing Loop
A passing loop (UK usage) or passing siding (North America) (also called a crossing loop, crossing place, refuge loop or, colloquially, a hole) is a place on a single line railway or tramway, often located at or near a station, where trains or trams travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Trains/trams going in the same direction can also overtake, provided that the signalling arrangement allows it. A passing loop is double-ended and connected to the main track at both ends, though a dead end siding known as a refuge siding, which is much less convenient, can be used. A similar arrangement is used on the gauntlet track of cable railways and funiculars, and in passing places on single-track roads. Single-track Railway
A single-track railway is a railway where trains traveling in both directions share the same track. Single track is usually found on lesser-used rail lines, often branch lines, where the level of traffic is not high enough to justify the cost of constructing and maintaining a second track. Advantages and disadvantages Single track is significantly cheaper to build and maintain, but has operational and safety disadvantages. For example, a single-track line that takes 15 minutes to travel through would have capacity for only two trains per hour in each direction safely. By contrast, a double track with signal boxes four minutes apart can allow up to 15 trains per hour in each direction safely, provided all the trains travel at the same speed. Ziegelstein Station
Ziegelstein station is a Nuremberg U-Bahn List of Nuremberg U-Bahn stations, station, located on the U2. Operated by the Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg. As the track between Ziegelstein and the terminus of U2, Flughafen (Nuremberg U-Bahn), Flughafen is single track without passing loops about two thirds of all U2 trains terminate here during the day. Prior to 2017, these early terminating U2 trains were signalled "U21". The word "Ziegelstein" refers to the neighborhood the station serves, but is also the German word for brick. Future plans As the stretch between Ziegelstein and Flughafen is both the longest in the system and one of the longest single track sections in any metro system in Germany, there have been debates about both an infill station and the upgrading of the line to double track operations or at least the addition of a passing loop at a "strategic" location to increase capacity. Rail Replacement Bus Service
A rail replacement bus service uses buses to replace a passenger train service on a temporary or permanent basis. The train service that is replaced may be of any type such as light rail, tram, streetcar, commuter rail, regional rail or heavy rail, intercity passenger service.
