Flipper (anatomy)
A flipper is a broad, flattened limb adapted for aquatic locomotion. It refers to the fully webbed, swimming appendages of aquatic vertebrates that are not fish. In animals with two flippers, such as whales, the flipper refers solely to the forelimbs. In animals with four flippers, such as pinnipeds and sea turtles, one may distinguish fore- and hind-flippers, or pectoral flippers and pelvic flippers. Animals with flippers include penguins (whose flippers are also called wings), cetaceans (e.g. dolphins and whales), pinnipeds (e.g. walruses, earless and eared seals), sirenians (e.g. manatees and dugongs), and marine reptiles such as the sea turtles and the now-extinct plesiosaurs, mosasaurs, ichthyosaurs, and metriorhynchids. Usage of the terms "fin" and "flipper" is sometimes inconsistent, even in the scientific literature. Flipper (band)
Flipper is an American punk rock band formed in San Francisco, California in 1979, continuing in often erratic fashion until the mid-1990s, then reuniting in 2005. The band influenced a number of grunge, punk rock and noise rock bands. Their slowed-down, bass-driven and heavily distorted style of punk is considered to have inspired bands such as the Melvins and Nirvana (band), Nirvana, whose bass player Krist Novoselic played with the band in the 2000s. History Early years (1979–1989) Flipper was founded by former The Sleepers (San Francisco band), Sleepers member Ricky Williams (musician), Ricky Williams (vocals), former Rad Command member Ted Falconi (guitar), and former Negative Trend members Will Shatter (bass) and Steve DePace (drums).
