The flight into Egypt is a story recounted in the Gospel of Matthew ( Matthew 2:13– 23) and in New Testament apocrypha. Soon after the visit by the Magi, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream telling him to flee to Egypt with Mary and the infant Jesus since King Herod would seek the child to kill him. The episode is frequently shown in art, as the final episode of the Nativity of Jesus in art, and was a common component in cycles of the ''Life of the Virgin'' as well as the '' Life of Christ''. Within the narrative tradition, iconic representation of the " Rest on the Flight into Egypt" developed after the 14th century. Flight Into Egypt (Titian)
The ''Flight into Egypt'' is an oil painting usually attributed to the Venetian Renaissance master Titian. This very early work by Titian was made in about 1508 or 1509. The painting is in the collection of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. A religious landscape painting, its "bold brushwork and exhilarating use of color" have led to it being described as one of Titian's masterpieces, as well as one of his earliest. Though some scholars dispute the attribution of the painting to Titian, it is usually accepted as one of his works from the beginning of his career. Subject ''Flight into Egypt'' depicts the biblical voyage of the newborn Jesus, along with Mary, mother of Jesus, Mary and Saint Joseph, Joseph as described in the Gospel of Matthew. The Gospel describes the Holy Family fleeing as the result of a vision from an angel, who told Joseph to bring them to Egypt since Herod the Great, King Herod would be coming to kill the baby Jesus. The painting thus takes ...

The Flight Into Egypt (El Greco)
''The Flight into Egypt'' is a c.1570 painting of the Flight into Egypt by El Greco, now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It is one of his earliest works, dating to his stay in Venice, and shows the major influence of Tintoretto and Jacopo Bassano, especially in the landscape background. The clouds and the chromaticism are similar to his ''Healing of the Man Born Blind'', though most of the tonalities show the influence of Raphael and Michelangelo. The Flight Into Egypt (Elsheimer)
__NOTOC__ ''The Flight into Egypt'' is an oil-on-copper cabinet painting by the German artist Adam Elsheimer dating from about 1609, while he was in Rome. It is thought to be the first naturalistic rendering of the night sky in Renaissance art. At Elsheimer's death in Rome in 1610, this picture was hanging in his bedroom. Like many other artists before and after him, Elsheimer has depicted the biblical Flight into Egypt, in which Joseph, Mary, and Jesus seek refuge from possible persecution by Herod. For its innovative fusing of religious and landscape elements, and its detailed juxtaposition of light and darkness, ''The Flight into Egypt'' is one of Elsheimer's most well-known and lauded works. It is also likely his last painting, for he died a year later. Elsheimer's treatment is unique in placing the Holy Family in a nocturnal setting, true to the biblical description. The darkness creates opposing feelings of intimacy and fear of the unknown. The painting channels the mysteri ...

The Flight Into Egypt (Lorrain)
''The Flight into Egypt'' is a 1635 oil painting by French artist Claude Lorrain, located in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, which is in Indianapolis, Indiana. It depicts the Flight into Egypt, when the Holy Family fled to Egypt to escape Herod's persecution. Description This early painting by Claude shows Joseph, Mary, and Jesus fleeing the massacre in Bethlehem. In a prefiguration of his future role, the infant Jesus holds the donkey's reins. Although the trio is escaping a slaughter, Claude depicted them in a serene setting. Landscapes like this made Claude famous by combining a rustic vocabulary of shepherds and towering trees with realistic portrayals of the Roman countryside. He perfected his depictions of the latter by risking malaria in order to make the sketches that would allow him to capture the campagna's golden sunlight and atmospheric effects. The Holy Family may be the subject, but the real focus is on light, not narrative. Claude's idealized, Acadian landscap ...

The Flight Into Egypt (Murillo)
''The Flight into Egypt'' is a 1647–1650 oil on canvas painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, which since 1948 has been in the Detroit Institute of Arts. It shows the flight into Egypt, a popular motif in Christian art from the 14th century onwards. It first appears in the written record whilst in the collection of Sir William Chapman in London, passing through other British collections until its sale at Christie's in London in 1945. It was bought by Maurice Harris, who took it to New York and donated it to its present home later that decade. Diego Angulo's ''Catálogo crítico'' lists at least two other treatments of that subject, namely the c.1660 one in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest and a 1645-1650 very similar but slightly larger version of the Detroit work now in the Palazzo Bianco in Genoa. The Budapest version adds two small angels hovering over the scene, whilst the main figures of Joseph, Mary and the Christ Child travel in the opposite direction to the Detroi ...
