Flag Of Seattle
The municipal flag of Seattle is teal and white, featuring the Seattle city logo (a portrait of Chief Seattle surrounded by two lines), with the words "City of Goodwill" above and "Seattle" below. The flag was designed by architect David Wright and endorsed by Seattle City Councilmember Paul Kraabel. It was adopted on July 16, 1990, for use during the Goodwill Games. The flag has been criticized for breaking conventional rules for good flag design, particularly its complex design that incorporates the city seal. North American Vexillological Association
The North American Vexillological Association (NAVA) is a membership organization devoted to vexillology, the study of flags. It was founded in 1967 by American vexillologist Whitney Smith, and others. Its membership of 1,100+ comprises flag scholars, enthusiasts, designers, collectors, conservators, educators, merchants, manufacturers, historians, and hobbyists from most states and provinces of the United States and Canada, and more than 30 other countries. The Seal of the City of Seattle consists of an artist's profile portrait of Chief Seattle under which appears the Arabic numerals 1869, the year of Seattle's incorporation in the Common Era. The Seattle Municipal Archives are the official archive of the city of Seattle. The organization is housed in Seattle City Hall. The organization was formally established in 1985. The city of Seattle stores its city records here. The Seattle Municipal Archive accepted from the National Archives and Records Administration to process records. By 2002 many of the archives photographs from before the 1930s had begun to deteriorate and the archival budget did not allow for all of them to be digitized to contemporary quality standards for archives. At this time, the archival collection had at least been scanned, but many of the pieces were low quality, and the decision was made to prioritize 3000 of the 1.5 million pieces in the collection for high quality digital preservation.
