Finnish Society Of Sciences And Letters
The Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters (, , ) is a Finnish learned society for natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. It is a bilingual (Swedish and Finnish) science academy and the oldest of the four science academies in Finland. The society was founded in 1838 and is based in Helsinki. It has a total of 120 full ordinary Finnish members, excluding members who have reached the age of 67 (a member who reaches the age of 67 retains the rights as a member but leaves his or her chair open for election of a new member), and about 120 foreign members. It is divided into four sections: I: mathematics and physics, II: biosciences, III: humanities, and IV: social sciences. The society publishes a yearbook, ''Sphinx'', and the book series ''Commentationes Humanarum Litterarum'', ''Commentationes Scientiarum Socialium'', ''Bidrag till kännedom av Finlands natur och folk'' and ''The History of Learning and Science in Finland 1828-1918''. Finland, officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. It borders Sweden to the northwest, Norway to the north, and Russia to the east, with the Gulf of Bothnia to the west and the Gulf of Finland to the south, opposite Estonia. Max Robert Engman (27 September 1945 – 19 March 2020) was a Finnish historian and translator. Engman was born in Helsinki. Engman, who from 1968–1973 was an official at the Finnish national archives in Helsinki, published in 1983 a much-noticed dissertation about St. Petersburg Saint Petersburg, formerly known as Petrograd and later Leningrad, is the second-largest city in Russia after Moscow. Kari Tarkiainen
Kari Valtteri Tarkiainen (born 14 June 1938 in Helsinki) is a Finnish historian and archivist, who served as the national archivist of Finland 1996–2003. He is a grandson of the scholar Viljo Tarkiainen and his wife, writer Maria Jotuni. Tarkiainen has had a career in the world of archives both in Finland and Sweden. From 1971 he was employed in the Swedish National Archives in Stockholm. He finished his career as archivist in Helsinki as chief of the National Archives of Finland 1996–2003. Tarkiainen became a PhD in 1974 with a dissertation on the view of Russia in Sweden during the early great power era. He is a specialist in medieval history, and has formed the conception of the Finnish reformer Mikael Agricola. Keijo Olavi Kajantie (born 1940) is a Finnish theoretical physicist and Professor and Adjoint Scientist at the Helsinki Institute of Physics. He was Professor of Physics at the University of Helsinki from 1973 to 2008. From 1985 to 1990 he was a Research Professor of the Academy of Finland and he has worked in the CERN Theory Division. He is best known for his contributions to the study of the electroweak and strong interactions at high temperatures, as well as to the field of ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. His research interests include ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions, finite temperature field theory, string theory and QCD matter, cosmological phase transitions and null infinity in general relativity.
