Fiji At The 2018 Commonwealth Games
Fiji competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia from April 4 to April 15, 2018. It was Fiji's 16th appearance at the Commonwealth Games. Fiji competed in 12 sports and made their first appearance in the Men’s rugby sevens tournament after a twelve year absence. Fiji announced a team of 97 athletes. Though only 96 competed. Weightlifter Apolonia Vaivai was the country's flag bearer during the opening ceremony. Alasio Sovita Naduva (born 25 June 1990) plays as a winger in the Fiji national rugby sevens team. He helped the Fiji Sevens side to win their fourth World Rugby Sevens Series in the 2018-19 season. Athletics was one of ten core sports that appeared at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. As a founding sport, athletics has appeared consistently since its introduction at the 1911 Inter-Empire Games; the recognized precursor to the Commonwealth Games. The competition took place between Sunday 8–15 April 2018 at the Carrara Stadium. Rugby sevens at the 2018 Commonwealth Games was held on the Gold Coast, Australia from April 13 to 15. The rugby sevens competition was held at Robina Stadium. This is the sixth time that the men's competition was held, following rugby sevens's debut at the 1998 Games, with women's rugby sevens making its debut. A total of sixteen men's and eight women's teams are scheduled to compete (312 athletes, at 12 per team plus one traveling reserve) in each respective tournament. Jasa Veremalua (born 29 May 1988) is a Fijian rugby union player who plays for the Tel Aviv Heat. He played for San Diego Legion in Major League Rugby (MLR). He also plays for the Fiji sevens team. Seremaia Tuwai Vunisa (born 23 March 1989), also known as Jerry Tuwai, is a Fiji rugby union player who plays for the Fiji national rugby sevens team. Tuwai made his debut for at the 2014 Gold Coast Sevens. He was part of the Fiji Sevens team that won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
