Fielding (cricket)
Fielding in the sport of cricket is the action of fielders in collecting the ball after it is struck by the striking batter, to limit the number of runs that the striker scores and/or to get a batter out by either catching a hit ball before it bounces, or by running out either batter before they can complete their current run. There are a number of recognised fielding positions and they can be categorised into the offside and leg side of the field. Fielding also involves trying to prevent the ball from making a boundary where four "runs" are awarded for reaching the perimeter and six for crossing it without touching the grass. A fielder may field the ball with any part of their body. In the sport of baseball, each of the nine players on a team is assigned a particular fielding position when it is their turn to play defense. Each position conventionally has an associated number, for use in scorekeeping by the official scorer: 1 (pitcher), 2 (catcher), 3 (first baseman), 4 (second baseman), 5 (third baseman), 6 (shortstop), 7 (left fielder), 8 (center fielder), and 9 (right fielder). Collectively, these positions are usually grouped into three groups: the outfield (left field, center field, and right field), the infield (first base, second base, third base, and shortstop), and the battery (pitcher and catcher). The town was named after Joseph Fielding Smith, Sr. (1838–1918), sixth president of the LDS Church, specifically his mother's ( Mary Fielding Smith's) maiden name. The Fielding Bradford House is an historic house built on a tract of land near North Elkhorn and Cane Run Creeks in Scott County, Kentucky. The house was originally owned by Fielding Bradford and is an example of an early Kentucky weatherboarded log house.
