Field Hockey At The 2003 Afro-Asian Games
Field hockey at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games was held over a period of eight days, from 23 October to 31 October 2003. It was one of the two sports which started before the opening ceremony of the Games, the other being football. The medal ceremonies were held on 30 October (women) and 31 October (men). All events took place at the Gachibowli Hockey Stadium, Hyderabad, India. Competition Eight teams each for the men's and women's events participated in the competition. The teams were divided into two pools, A and B, each consisting of four teams. Two rounds were held - league matches, and finals. Field Hockey
Field hockey (or simply referred to as hockey in some countries where ice hockey is not popular) is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with 11 players in total, made up of 10 field players and a goalkeeper. Teams must move a hockey ball around a field by hitting it with a field hockey stick, hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal (sports), goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, although grass has become increasingly rare as a playing surface. 2003 Afro-Asian Games
The 2003 Afro-Asian Games, officially known as the First Afro-Asian Games or I Afro-Asian Games and unofficially known as the Inaugural Afro-Asian Games, was a major international multi-sport event held in Hyderabad, India, from 24 October (excluding football and hockey, which began on 22 October and 23 October respectively) to 1 November 2003. The Afro-Asian Games was the largest sporting event ever to be held in Hyderabad, and one of the largest in India, second only to the 2010 Commonwealth Games by athletes' volume. The scale of these Games exceeds even the two Asian Games held in Delhi in 1951 (both by athletes' volume and by number of participating nations) and 1982 (by number of participating nations). Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi Athletic Stadium (GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium) is a multipurpose stadium situated in the Gachibowli suburb of Hyderabad, Telangana, India.
