Fencing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre fencing competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing took place on August 12 at the Olympic Green Convention Centre. There were 40 competitors from 21 nations. The event was won by Zhong Man of China, the nation's first medal in the men's sabre. Nicolas Lopez's silver put France back on the podium after a one-Games absence. Mihai Covaliu of Romania became the 13th man to win multiple medals in the event, adding a bronze to his 2000 gold medal. Background This was the 26th appearance of the event, which is the only fencing event to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The China National Convention Center, previously known as the Olympic Green Convention Center () is a convention center located in the Olympic Green in Beijing. History It was designed by RMJM and was originally used for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It covers an area of 270,000 square metres. Jason Rogers (born April 14, 1983) is an American saber fencer. Fencing career Rogers was born in Houston, Texas. At the urging of his parents, he began to learn fencing at the Westside Fencing Center under the tutelage of his coach, Daniel Costin. He currently fences for the Los Angeles International Fencing Center. Rogers graduated from Brentwood School (Los Angeles, California) in Los Angeles, California in 2001. He signed with Ohio State University, where he was the NCAA sabre bronze medalist in 2002 and 2003. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology ın 2006. Alexander James O'Connell (born 17 April 1988) is a sabre fencer who competed for Great Britain at the 2008 Olympic Games. Sporting career In 2005, O’Connell won the cadet world championship in Austria. In the following year, he was selected for the England under-20 Commonwealth team in India, where he won gold in the individual and team events. Nikolay Anatolyevich Kovalev (; born 28 October 1986) is a Russian former sabre fencer. He won a bronze medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and a gold medal in the 2014 World Championships in Kazan. He is three-times World team champion (2010, 2011 and 2013) and twice European team champion (2007 and 2012). He is now a coach in California in the United States.
