Antonín Vězda
Antonín (Toni) Vězda (25 November 1920 – 10 November 2008) was a Czech lichenologist. After completing a university education that was postponed by World War II, Vězda taught botany at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Czech University of Life Sciences. In 1958, he was dismissed from his university position as a result of the restrictions placed on academic freedoms by the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, communist regime in power. He eventually was hired as a lichen researcher by the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, who allowed him to work from his apartment, which served also as an office and herbarium. Vězda was a productive worker, publishing nearly 400 scientific papers between 1948 and 2008, most solitarily, describing hundreds of new taxon, taxa, and building up a herbarium scientific collection, collection of more than 300,000 specimens. Foliicolous Lichen
A foliicolous lichen is a lichen which grows on the surfaces of living leaves of vascular plants, usually inhabiting the upper surface ('' epiphyllous'') but sometimes also the lower surface ('' hypophyllous''). Foliicolous lichens largely occur in tropical environments and of the over 800 foliicolous lichens accepted (as of 2008) over 600 of these are known from the tropics. Unlike most lichens which are common in humid but cool and temperate climates, these tropical lichens are more suited to the higher temperatures and lower light levels present beneath the rainforest canopy, where they are involved in the nutrient cycle and water retention. Pilocarpaceae
The Pilocarpaceae are a family of crustose lichens in the order Lecanorales. The species of this family have a cosmopolitan distribution and have been found in a variety of climatic regions. Pilocarpaceae was circumscribed by Alexander Zahlbruckner in Adolf Engler's influential 1905 work '' Die Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien''. In 2004, the family Micareaceae included the genera; '' Helocarpon'', '' Micarea'', ''Psilolechia'', '' Roccellinastrum'', and ''Scutula''. Then in 2005, molecular phylogeny based on mitochondrial rDNA sequences showed that the genus ''Helocarpon'' was not related to the ''Micareaceae'' family and the rest of the genus were related to the Pilocarpaceae family and other genera.
