''Fear'' (commonly stylized as ''fear'') is the third studio album by American alternative rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket. The album is their second album for Columbia Records, and was released on August 27, 1991. It became the first commercially successful album for the band, selling over a million copies and was certified platinum three years after release, on September 1, 1994. The album debuted at number 49 on ''Billboard'' 200 a year after its release. Two of the album's singles peaked within the ''Billboard'' Hot 100's top 40: " All I Want" and "Walk on the Ocean", which peaked at numbers 15 and 18 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, respectively. Background Toad the Wet Sprocket's first album, '' Bread & Circus'', was financed and recorded by the band in eight days for $650 in 1989. Toad (also known as a hoptoad) is a common name for certain frogs, especially of the family Bufonidae, that are characterized by dry, leathery skin, short legs, and large bumps covering the parotoid glands. Randy Guss
Randel "Randy" Guss (born March 7, 1967) is an American musician, best known as the drummer for the band Toad the Wet Sprocket from its formation in 1986 until he stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Career Guss formed Toad the Wet Sprocket with Glen Phillips, Todd Nichols, and Dean Dinning in 1986. As of January 2020, Guss left the band and no longer records or performs with them. The primary reason for his departure is that he was unable to tour due to the progression of his osteogenesis imperfecta. Josh Daubin filled in for Randy for a time and has since become the full-time drummer for the band. Since his retirement, Randy has found joy and fulfillment in teaching and continues to do so both remotely and in-person from his studio in San Diego, CA. Todd Nichols (musician)
Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1986. The band at the time consisted of vocalist/guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss, who stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Guss was replaced by drummer Josh Daubin, who supported them as their drummer on tours from 2017 through 2022 and also played drums on their 2021 album "Starting Now". Most recently, Carl Thomson took Daubin's place and has been drumming for Toad the Wet Sprocket on tour since 2023. They had chart success in the 1990s with singles that included "Walk on the Ocean", " All I Want", " Something's Always Wrong", " Fall Down", and " Good Intentions". Glen Phillips (born December 29, 1970) is an American songwriter, lyricist, singer and guitarist. He is the lead singer and songwriter of the alternative rock group Toad the Wet Sprocket and also records and performs as a solo artist. Biography Early life Phillips was born to a Reform Jewish family in Santa Barbara, California. His father was a college professor who taught physics. Although his family was Jewish, with Glen having a Bar Mitzvah, his family was secular and his father took him to meditation classes. Phillips attended San Marcos High School, where he was a part of choir and theatre. He originally envisioned becoming a teacher. He began to make music at 14 years old. ''Dulcinea'' is an album by Toad the Wet Sprocket released in 1994. It is their fourth studio album with Columbia Records and the follow-up to their popular album ''Fear'', which was released in 1991. Two songs from ''Dulcinea'' charted on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts: " Fall Down" and " Something's Always Wrong". ''Dulcinea'' was RIAA Certified Gold on September 1, 1994, and Platinum on July 31, 1995. The album's name is a reference to the love interest in Miguel de Cervantes' classic Spanish novel, ''Don Quixote''. At least two songs on the album allude to themes found in the novel. "Crowing" is a song about a person who does not know how to hold on to a lover. "Windmills" is a metaphorical song about how people spend much of their lives chasing absurd or impossible pursuits (the allusion being to a specific scene in ''Don Quixote'' where the title character uselessly attacks a windmill). ''Bread & Circus'' is the debut album by American alternative rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket, originally self-released on cassette in 1988, and re-released in 1989 by Columbia Records. In May 2009, the band announced plans to re-release ''Bread & Circus'', out of print since 2001, in a remastered edition with expanded artwork and unreleased tracks culled from the album sessions. In 2010, the band signed a deal with Primary Wave to handle their back catalog and licensing. The reissues had been confirmed by lead singer Glen Phillips via Toad's "Fan Questions" portion of their official website for release in 2011, but never occurred.
