Fare Avoidance
Fare avoidance, as distinct from ''fare evasion'', is the lawful use of knowledge to travel using tickets which cost significantly less than the 'normal' fare for a given journey, which is what one might be expected to use. It is common in some parts of the world with complex travel networks, notably the National Rail network of Great Britain. The term is sometimes used as a synonym of fare evasion. Methods of avoiding fares Split ticketing The practice of buying multiple tickets instead of one ticket for a transport itinerary is called split ticketing. Some rail systems or airlines calculate fares based on an individual route's popularity and a host of other factors in addition to mileage. Thus, the total cost of two tickets, from A to P and from P to B, may be less than one ticket from A to B, giving an opportunity to save money, especially if P is en route between A and B. Fare Evasion
Fare evasion or fare dodging is the act of travel without payment on public transit. When considered problematic, it is mitigated by revenue protection officers and ticket barriers, staffed or automatic, are in place to ensure only those with valid tickets may access the transport. The term fare avoidance is sometimes used as a euphemistic synonym and sometimes used to refer to the lawful use of much cheaper tickets. Fare evasion and fare fraud may or may not be a crime, depending on jurisdiction. Methods On stations One method of fare evasion is jumping or climbing over the turnstiles which bar the entryway into a subway system; hence the term, "turnstile jumping". Fare-dodgers also can walk right behind a passenger with a valid ticket before closing of some types of ticket barrier gates (this is called tailgating). Common Stored Value Ticket
A common stored value ticket was a magnetic strip, plastic magnetically sensitive card used for paying fares on the MTR and Kowloon–Canton Railway, KCR railway systems in Hong Kong from 1984 to 1999. It was also used on Citybus (Hong Kong), Citybus and Kowloon Motor Bus for some MTR and KCR feeder bus services and two branches of Café de Coral, these tickets however, could not be used for 1st class services or trips from or to Lo Wu station on the KCR. The system was replaced by the Octopus card system in 1997 and phased out on 2 January 1999. The MTR and KCR have continued to issue magnetic strip cards for single-journey and souvenir tickets. To encourage use, fares had a discount when the trip was paid by this card. In addition, higher value tickets had bonus value stored when purchased. The ''Keystone Service'' is a 195 mile (314 km) regional passenger train service from Amtrak, that operates between the Harrisburg Transportation Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, running along the Philadelphia to Harrisburg Main Line (known as the Keystone Corridor). Most trains then continue along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) to Penn Station in New York City. Trips between Harrisburg and New York take approximately hours, including hours between Harrisburg and Philadelphia. The Philadelphia to Harrisburg Main Line is a rail line owned and operated by Amtrak in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The ''Pennsylvanian'' is a daily daytime Amtrak train running between New York City and Pittsburgh via Philadelphia. The trains travel across the Appalachian Mountains, through Pennsylvania's capital Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, suburban and central Philadelphia, and New Jersey en route to New York. The entire train ride takes about 9 hours total: 1.5 hours between New York and Philadelphia, 2 hours between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, and 5.5 hours between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.
