Factor Prize In Southern Art
The Factor Prize for Southern Art, now renamed the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, was established in 2007 with a five year commitment by Elizabeth and Mallory Factor and the Gibbes Museum of Art. It was given annually with a cash prize of $10,000, to "acknowledge an artist whose work contributes to a new understanding of the South" and was the most generous prize of its type in the region. Since 2013 the prize has been awarded by Society 1858. The prize may be awarded to an artist who has already produced a body of significant work or whose work shows considerable promise. Eligible artists are those who reside, work or are from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia. Mallory Factor
Sir Professor Mallory Factor, Order of the Nation (Grenada), KCN (born July 16, 1950) is an American pharmaceutical executive, professor, author, and media contributor. Factor is the founder and executive chairman of IntraBio Inc., a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company based in Austin, Texas which developed levacetylleucine, commercially known as AQNEURSA, for the treatment of neurological manifestations of Niemann-Pick Disease Type C. Factor is visiting senior fellow in entrepreneurship at the Department of Pharmacology, University of Oxford, U.K. He was the John C. Gibbes Museum Of Art
The Gibbes Museum of Art, formerly known as the Gibbes Art Gallery, is an art museum in Charleston, South Carolina. Established as the Carolina Art Association in 1858, the museum moved into a new Beaux Arts building at 135 Meeting Street, in the Charleston Historic District, in 1905. The Gibbes houses a premier collection of over 10,000 works of fine art, principally American works, many with a connection to Charleston or the South. The benefactor, James Shoolbred Gibbes, donated $100,000 to the Carolina Arts Association for the "erection of a suitable building for the exhibitions of paintings." The city did not receive the money until after the resolution of a will contest filed by nieces and nephews of Gibbes. Their case was heard in the state court of New York during 1900 and 1901.
